2024 US Open tennis betting tips, odds and preview

The final Grand Slam tennis tournament of 2024 is almost upon us with the US Open ready to kick-off in New York on August 26.

Players, fans and punters will be champing at the bit ahead of the action at Flushing Meadows where glory is at stake for the sport’s biggest stars.

Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff will be out to defend their titles but the likes of Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka will all be aiming to justify their positions towards the head of the betting market.

US Open betting is always hugely popular with the 14-day festival of tennis offering up hundreds of matches for bettors to get involved with. For those betting on the US Open, let’s take a closer look at the US Open tennis betting odds, best bets and leading bookmakers ahead of the tournament.

✅ Quick tips for the US Open betting

  • Have a strategy – for example, are you looking to back underdogs to cause upsets? Or do you prefer to seek winners with the favourites, maybe in an accumulator?
  • Quality over quantity – with the sheer number of matches, certainly in the opening week, it’s easy to find a possible bet in a whole host of contests. However, this is an easy way to find yourself in an early hole. Whittle them down to the bets you feel are most likely to win and/or offer the best value.
  • Watch what you can – the more tennis you watch, the more you’ll get a feel for the form a player is in. You might also pick up some useful information from the TV commentary teams before you place a wager.
  • Study the head-to-heads – when it comes betting on US Open matches, head-to-head records play an important part. If an underdog has lost five times out of five to his opponent, do you really want to be backing him this time? You can find this match-up info online with ease.

🎾 US Open men’s singles betting preview

The 2024 season has turned into an intriguing inter-generational battle, one which will be decided at the US Open.

Jannik Sinner claimed his first Grand Slam title at January’s Australian Open on his way to becoming world number one but it was fellow youngster Carlos Alcaraz who dominated the mid-season, winning at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

However, all-time great Novak Djokovic still had something to say, claiming Olympic gold in Paris earlier this month, and the 37-year-old now heads to New York seeking a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title. After a slow start, will the Serb turn out to be 2024’s standout player?

💚 US Open favourites – Men

The winner tends to come from the top three seeds (see below) and it would certainly be no surprise were that to be the case in 2024.

The bookies consider Carlos Alcaraz the man to beat. The 11/8 favourite has already won the French Open and Wimbledon this season and narrowly missed out on gold at the Olympics. The Spaniard has won in New York before (in 2022) and so looks a strong candidate, although after such a gruelling few months, fatigue has to be a worry for potential backers.

Novak Djokovic (12/5) endured a poor start to 2024, certainly by his insanely high standards, but he’ll arrive in New York buzzing with confidence after completing the full set of major tennis titles by winning the Olympics without losing a set. Now back on his favourite hardcourts, he should contend – if motivation remains.

Jannik Sinner, the world number one, is the other principal in the US Open betting. The Italian, also a 12/5 shot, has already won at this level on a hardcourt this season, claiming the Australian Open title. He also pocketed the Miami Masters 1000 event. However, form has tailed off a little in recent months when playing on the clay and grass, while he’s struggled with a host of niggling injuries and illness.

Let’s check out our US Open betting tips on the men’s side.

✨ Odds and tips to win US Open men’s singles

Novak Djokovic, 12/5 – Won here 12 months ago and arrives in NYC having turned his season around in recent weeks. Made the final of Wimbledon just weeks after knee surgery and while he was well beaten by Carlos Alcaraz that day, he gained revenge at the Olympic Games, defeating the Spaniard in the gold-medal match. Now hits his favourite surface and knows he’ll set a new male-and-female record of 25 Grand Slam singles titles if he wins here.

Alexander Zverev, 12/1 – Looks a chunky price given form is strong, as is his track record in New York. The German’s last three visits to Flushing Meadows have resulted in QF-SF-RU finishes. Beat Alcaraz at this year’s Australian Open before losing from two sets up against Daniil Medvedev. That’s the worry – Zverev has been unable to get over the line in a number of big matches in recent years – but that looks built into the price.

Bet on Zverev at 12/1 with Sky Bet

Matteo Berrettini, 45/1 – For one further down the market, try Berrettini. He’s barely played on hardcourts since he latest return from injury but he was a semi-finalist in New York in 2019 and has contested two quarter-finals since. Has been surging since his return and hits the hardcourts having claimed back-to-back ATP titles on clay. Using his big serve well, Berrettini also performed admirably during the grass season. With US Open tennis betting odds of 70/1, he is worth backing to go well.

🎾 US Open women’s singles betting preview

Once again, we’ve had a women’s tennis season where no single player has managed to dominate the Grand Slam tournaments.

After Aryna Sabalenka won the Australian Open, it was no surprise for clay queen Iga Swiatek to reign supreme at the French Open but while the favourite won at Roland Garros it was a 225/1 shot – Barbora Krejcikova – who claimed the Wimbledon title.

The US Open has had its fair share of surprises in recent years – literally no-one saw Emma Raducanu’s triumph as a qualifier coming in 2021, while Sloane Stephens and Flavia Pennetta have won at big odds in the past decade.

Could we be in for another shock? Let’s look at out US Open betting tips for the women’s singles.

💚 US Open favourites – Women

Iga Swiatek remains the world number one and, despite Olympic semi-final defeat, the best player on clay, but her credentials to win hardcourt Slams are not so convincing. She’s only been past the last 16 on two occasions, albeit one of those saw her left the title here in 2022. Recent form, including that shock loss in Paris to Qinwen Zheng, doesn’t suggest she’s about to repeat the trick.

Perhaps Aryna Sabalenka can capitalise. Her hardcourt Slam form is top-notch with her last six such events producing these results: W-RU-W-SF-4R-SF. Notably, she skipped the Olympics, and her early move onto the hardcourts has the potential to reap dividends in New York.

Elena Rybakina, the tour’s ace leader, is the third favourite but is yet to go past round three in five previous visits, while she continues to struggle with injury and illness.

Defending champion Coco Gauff looks a better bet, although in 2024 she’s rarely shown the sort of form that carried her to the title here 12 months ago. Her forehand can collapse, as was the case at Wimbledon.

✨ Odds and tips to win US Open women’s singles

Aryna Sabalenka, 4/1 – Of those at the top of the market, the Belarusian rates the best bet. She’s got a very impressive surface record and that early move onto the hardcourts gives her a jump start on some of her title rivals.

Back Sabalenka at 4/1 with BetMGM

Emma Navarro, 35/1 – The American is enjoying a fine season and could be flying under the radar somewhat. She beat Gauff at Wimbledon and has already taken down Sabalenka on a hardcourt this season. Was also just a point away from defeating eventual champion Qinwen Zheng at the Olympics. Caught the eye again at the warm-up event in Toronto and could be a dark horse in New York.

Bet on Navarro each way at 25/1 with Betfred

Diana Shnaider, 35/1 – The Russian is on a tear coming into this tournament. Since the start of May, she’s churned out win after win, a run which has taken in WTA titles in Bad Homburg (grass) and Budapest (clay), plus 10 top-50 victories, including one over Gauff in Toronto. Certainly has underdog potential and worth backing each way.

📄 US Open facts and stats

  • The US Open is Novak Djokovic’s worst Grand Slam in terms of titles won. ‘Only’ four of the Serb’s 24 Grand Slam titles have been claimed in New York. He has made the final on 10 of his last 15 visits though.
  • In the last 20 years, the men’s singles winner has come from the top three seeds on 17 occasions and from the top six on 19 occasions (the odd one out being Marin Cilic in 2014).
  • Three of the last four US Opens have seen the men’s champion win his maiden Grand Slam title (Dominic Thiem, Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz).
  • Eight of the last nine Grand Slam men’s singles titles have been won by either Novak Djokovic or Carlos Alcaraz. The man to break the duopoly was Jannik Sinner at this year’s Australian Open.

  • The women’s singles title has not been successfully defended at the US Open since Serena Williams won in 2014 (she was also champion in 2012 and 2013).
  • Five of the last nine women’s singles titles have been won by a player outside of the top 14 seeds – and at big tennis odds!
