Luke Littler and Michael van Gerwen will meet in the final of the World Darts Championship tonight, with the winner pocketing £500,000.
17-year-old Luke Littler started the competition as the pre-tournament favourite, competing in it for just the second time following his breathtaking run to the final last year.
Littler, who won the Premier League, World Series and Grand Slam of Darts last year cruised past Stephen Bunting in last night’s semi final, winning 6-1 after having beaten Nathan Aspinall 5-2 in his quarter final on New Year’s Day.
Standing in his way of a first World Championship title is Michael van Gerwen, the competition’s second most successful player in history with three world title crowns to his name.
2024 was the first year since 2011 that the Dutchman hasn’t won a PDC major tournament, reaching the final of both the Masters and the World Matchplay but losing out in both to Stephen Bunting and Luke Humphries respectively.
The 35-year-old won his semi final with similar ease to Littler, thrashing Chris Dobey 6-1 following his quarter final victory over Callan Rydz by a 5-3 scoreline.
Littler and van Gerwen have met each other on 12 occasions in the last year, with their head-to-head record tied at six wins each, though the Englishman has won each of their last two meetings, most recently on the European Tour back in October when he romped to a 6-1 victory in legs, despite MVG averaging 112 in the match.
