Yashasvi Jaiswal broke Virat Kohli’s record of most runs in a bilateral test series against England. Jaiswal was tied with Kohli in the list with 655 runs and he leapfrogged him after he got off the mark in the fifth Test in Dharamsala. Jaiswal will now set his sights on Sunil Gavaskar’s record for most runs in a bilateral Test series for India. Gavaskar scored 774 runs vs West Indies in 1971.
Virat Kohli scored 655 runs against England in the 2016 home series, however, Jaiswal matched his numbers in the first four games of the series.
Yashasvi Jaiswal has been magnificent in the ongoing Test series. He started the series with an 80-run knock in the first Test in Hyderabad and backed it up with back-to-back double centuries in the second and third Test. He then scored over 100 runs across two innings in the fourth Test.
Record Breaker Yashasvi Jaiswal
Jaiswal has already broken a plethora of records in the Test series. He has already scored the most sixes in an innings and most sixes in a series for India. He can break a few records in the ongoing Test if he can score a century in the Test. Jaiswal, who has already scored two hundreds, needs just one century to go past Kohli and join Mohammed Azharuddin and Rahul Dravid in the list of most hundreds in a Test series against England.
Meanwhile, India bowled out England for 218 after the visitors opted to bat. Indian spinners Kuldeep Yadav and R Ashwin ran riot and bamboozled the England batting. Kuldeep bagged a five-wicket haul while R Ashwin managed to take four wickets. Ravindra Jadeja got the wicket of Joe Root.
India made two changes to their playing XI from the last Test. Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested from the last Test, made a return to the playing XI in place of Akash Deep while Rajat Patidar was ruled out of the game due to injury, making way for Devdutt Padikkal’s debut.
“Rajat Patidar got hit on his left ankle during Team India’s practice session on 6th March, 2024. He pulled up sore on the morning of the game and was not available for selection for the 5th Test,” BCCI said.
India are 3-1 ahead in the series but the match stands of utmost importance as crucial WTC points are at stake. India are placed at the top of the WTC table and a win in Dharamsala will further solidify their place in the team.
