  • The Carolina Hurricanes staved off elimination on Saturday but still trail the New York Rangers 3-1
  • The Rangers are a perfect 4-0 at home in the playoffs as the series returns to MSG for Game 5 on Monday, May 13
  • Below, see the Hurricanes vs Rangers predictions, odds, and player props for Game 5

The Carolina Hurricanes (52-23-7, 25-13-3 away) finally got on the board in the best-of-seven series with the New York Rangers (55-23-4, 30-11-0 home) on Saturday but if they’re going to keep their season alive in Game 5 on Monday night, they will need to had the Rangers their first postseason loss at home.

Carolina and New York meet at 7:10 pm ET at Madison Square Garden and the Rangers are slight -112 favorites to close out the series tonight. The Hurricanes come back at -108 to extend it to a Game 6. The game total is sitting at 5.5 with the under slightly favored at -112.

Carolina Hurricanes vs New York Rangers Prediction

The Hurricanes were brutally unlucky to be down 3-0 in this series. They generated 12.81 xGF in the first three games of the series (per moneypuck.com), compared to 10.14, but wound up on the wrong end of three one-goal games – including two in overtime – thanks to sensational goaltending from Igor Shesterkin.

The Russian has a 2.25 GAA and .927 save percentage so far in the postseason, well ahead of Carolina starter Frederik Andersen (2.63 GAA, .897 SV%) in both categories. The Rangers also went 2-1 against the Hurricanes in the regular season with a pair of one-goal victories. Carolina’s lone win, though, was a dominant 6-1 victory at MSG on Jan. 2, when they put a half-dozen by Shesterkin on just 27 shots.

While coach Rod Brind’Amour won’t be happy with his team blowing a 3-1 lead in Game 4, Carolina was full value for its 4-3 win.  They outshot the Rangers 31-25 and had a 48-40 edge in shot attempts. The xGF were 3.66 to 2.53 in Carolina’s favor. With the Hurricanes finally getting over the hump in Game 4, I expect another season-saving effort in Game 5.

  • Hurricanes vs Rangers Game 5 prediction: 3-2 Carolina
  • Picks: Hurricanes moneyline (-108); under 5.5 goals (-112)

The best odds to score at least one point in Game 5 belong to New York’s Artemi Panarin, who is -280 to record a point and +160 to have a multi-point game. Panarin finished fourth in the NHL in scoring during the regular season with 120 points, his first time over the century mark, and has nine points in New York’s first eight playoff games.

Surprisingly, Jake Guentzel (-220) has the best odds among Carolina players, ahead of Sebastian Aho (-190), who led the team with a career-high 89 points in the regular season and has a team-high 10 points in the playoffs.  Guentzel is second on the team with nine points in nine postseason games.

  • Aho over 0.5 points (-190)
  • Shesterkin over 29.5 saves (-125)
