Budie: ISPs to synchronise with authorities in combating online gambling

The Indonesian government has urged Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to take a more active role in eradicating online gambling.

Budi Arie Setiadi, Minister of Communications and Informatics Indonesia (Kominfo) has reminded ISPs to cooperate with the government to curb the proliferation of online gambling content. One main step is for ISPs to automatically synchronise by updating the list of negative content including online gambling to the Kominfo Positive Trust DNS.

“Currently, only 35% of the total 1,011 ISPs have carried out automatic synchronisation. And if there are those who don’t, they will be announced,” the minister stated during a virtual online gambling press conference in South Jakarta.

Budie issued a strong warning and policy of revoking permits to ISPs that do not support the eradication of online gambling. According to him, this was done in accordance with Law Number 36 of 1999 concerning Telecommunications and the provisions for amendments.

“We are also taking action based on the Minister of Communication and Information Regulation Number 13 of 2019 concerning the Implementation of Telecommunications Services and its amendment provisions,” he said.

Illegal online gambling has been a problem for the Indonesian Government, despite the fact that gambling itself is strictly prohibited in the country with serious penalties. In April, the government formed a task force to specifically deal with this issue. They have also blocked a number of websites in an effort to clamp down on these illegal activities online.
