2024 UEFA European Championship preview: Denmark vs. England odds, prediction, best bet
Denmark dictated play in its opening game against Slovenia for the majority of the 90 minutes. Unfortunately for De Rød-Hvide, they were unable to find a second goal and capitalize on their dominance. This resulted in Erik Janza’s goal acting as the eventual equalizer for Slovenia as the teams split the spoils.
England might be one of the favorites at this tournament, but one wouldn’t know watching its performance against Serbia. The Three Lions struggled to control the tempo as stars, such as Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka, failed to get involved, resulting in a nervy 1-0 win. Nevertheless, a win will almost surely seal the fate of Gareth Southgate’s men atop Group C.

Analysis: Despite being the tournament and group favorite, as well as one of the most talented attacking teams at Euro 2024, England tallied the fewest shots of any country in Group C during matchday one. Coupled with the fact that the Three Lions only had 54% of the ball, Southgate has reason to worry.
England will have to be better on matchday two against a country that’s no stranger to making Cinderella runs in this competition.
Denmark’s stubborn defense nearly won it three points, but a Slovenian screamer from outside of the box prevented the win. De Rød-Hvide’s set-up saw Slovenia tally 70 touches in the final third, register two shots on target and accumulate an expected goal (xG) tally of just 1.1.
Quality Premier League attackers, such as Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund, can also pick a shaky Three Lions defense apart if they play the way they did on Sunday.
England will look to establish better control of the match and that starts in midfield. Trent Alexander-Arnold looked shaky in his new role in the middle of the park. Therefore, Southgate could call on someone like Conor Gallagher or Kobbie Mainoo to help dictate the tempo in more natural roles.
The Three Lions have an abundance of attacking talent on their roster. Southgate isn’t one to chop and change his starting XI often, so Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka could retain their roles out wide heading into this match. However, if they go missing for large stretches as they did against Serbia, the manager won’t be as forgiving with the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Eberechi Eze, Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer on the bench.
I believe this match will mirror those played on the first matchday. It’ll be a back-and-forth between two teams that are apprehensive to commit extra bodies forward until a goal opens the game up. In the end, I’ll side with the depth and talent of the English squad to hang on late for three points.
