England through to Euro 2024 last 16 after Albania defeat by Spain

England are through to the last 16 of Euro 2024 after Albania failed to beat Spain in their final match of Group B.

Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win at Dusseldorf Arena as Spain topped the group.

The result means that even if England lose against Slovenia in their final group-stage game on Tuesday, they will qualify for the knockout phase as one of the best third-placed teams.

European Championship qualification rules see the top two sides in each of the six groups advance through, with the four highest-ranked third-placed teams joining them.

England will top Group C with a win in Cologne and could also finish first with a draw, if Denmark fail to beat Serbia by more than one goal.

If Gareth Southgate’s side lose they will come third if Denmark win, but second if the Danes don’t beat Serbia.

Their last-16 tie with then be determined by other finishing positions in other groups.

Albania’s failure to beat Spain also sees France and Netherlands through with a game to spare. They conclude Group D against Poland and Austria respectively on Tuesday.
