2024 Copa America final preview: Argentina vs. Colombia odds, prediction, best bet

Argentina’s on an unprecedented run right now. If La Albiceleste win one more match, they’ll have triumphed at their last three major tournaments (2021 Copa America, 2022 World Cup, 2024 Copa America). This streak would solidify Lionel Scaloni as one of the most accomplished managers in the country’s rich history.

The world’s No. 1 ranked team has a tall task ahead of it with Colombia though. Los Cafateros are in the middle of the longest unbeaten run on the planet as they’ve now gone 28 matches without tasting defeat. Nestor Lorenzo’s squad has beaten some of the best in the world during that span, including Brazil, Mexico, Spain, the United States and Uruguay.

Let’s take a closer look at the odds and trends ahead of this highly anticipated Copa America clash:

What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? Sunday will answer the age-old question as the world’s hottest team meets the best.

This will be the first meeting between the two South American powerhouses in over two years. Recent history hasn’t been kind to Colombia in this matchup. Argentina has posted a record of 12 wins, five draws and three losses since the turn of the century.

Lorenzo has set up Los Cafateros in the same style as much as he can this tournament. He opts to play in a 4-3-3, or a variation of the formation, in every match. The manager has made just six changes across five Copa America games to date. He’ll be forced to make at least one more against Argentina.

While a right back may not seem like a big loss, Crystal Palace’s Daniel Munoz has been one of the tournament’s standout players. He’s bombed forward from the Colombian backline and gotten involved with the attack to the tune of two goals and one assist in five appearances. His red card against Uruguay means he’ll miss out on the final.

Munoz’s absence will put more stress on the attack, specifically James Rodriguez. The former Real Madrid standout has turned back the clock this tournament with seven goal contributions (one goal, six assists) thus far. He must be at his best if Los Cafeteros want to dethrone Argentina.

La Albiceleste have lined up in a 4-4-2 in every game except for one at this tournament. Scaloni leans on the strength of his side, the midfield. This allows his forwards — namely Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez — to stay high and put themselves in positions to succeed.

In addition to possessing potentially the deepest attacking unit in international football, Argentina’s defense has been superb. La Albiceleste have allowed just one goal at the tournament to date, a controversial equalizer from Ecuador.

Scaloni’s team somehow always finds a way to get a result in the end. The depth and resiliency of this team are unmatched, and for those reasons, I like Argentina to put an end to Colombia’s 28-match unbeaten run and lift its record 16th Copa America trophy in Miami.
