BRI Blocks 1,049 Accounts Linked to Online Gambling

Jakarta. The state-run Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) has blocked at least a thousand accounts linked to online gambling.

According to BRI’s risk management director Agus Sudiarto, the bank actively browses various online gambling websites to look for BRI accounts that gamblers might use to make their deposits. Once identified, BRI immediately blocks these accounts. This strategy has been in place since July 2023, and it is still ongoing to this day.

“We have identified and blocked 1,049 accounts in July 2023-June 2024,” Agus was quoted as saying in a press statement over the weekend.

According to the Online Gambling Task Force, Indonesia is home to 4 million online gamblers, 40 percent of whom are between 31-50 years old. The Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) revealed Indonesia recorded 60 million online gambling transactions in the first quarter of this year. These transactions were worth Rp 101 trillion ($6.2 billion).
