Kids Days will dominate the promotional landscape at many major and minor league ballparks this summer Sunday.

The U.S. women’s national soccer team hopes to enjoy its equivalent overseas.

Without multiple veteran mainstays, the young Americans (crank that David Bowie) rolled to a 3-0 win against Zambia on Thursday in their Paris Summer Games opener. Trinity Rodman got the scoring going, and Mallory Swanson had a pair of goals within seconds, all in the first 25 minutes of action en France.

A far greater challenge looms today as the U.S. takes on Germany as group play continues. We look at that matchup as well as action from a full MLB slate.

SEATTLE MARINERS AT CHICAGO WHITE SOX

Will he stay? Will he go? How long will he throw?

Those questions face White Sox All-Star left-hander Garrett Crochet at seemingly every turn as he navigates trade rumors and injury management.

Crochet’s 2022 Tommy John surgery still looms close enough in the rear view. While he has fanned an American League-best 157 batters in a career-high 111 1/3 innings, the organization remains cognizant of his workload. Crochet threw a mere 74 pitches in Tuesday’s loss at Texas, and manager Pedro Grifol said the club “will hover around” that mark in the near term.

Unless he’s particularly efficient against the visiting Mariners on Sunday, Crochet’s mere presence may not be enough to end Chicago’s 13-game losing streak. Then again, his quality start against Boston on June 7 did help the White Sox end a franchise-worst 14-game slide.

Rejuvenated by the acquisition of Randy Arozarena, the Mariners have hit seven home runs while winning the first two games of the series. Jorge Polanco had three blasts during that span. Considering Crochet’s pitch count means a beleaguered bullpen will have to give Chicago at least four innings, we think Polanco and the M’s will keep going.

USWNT VERSUS GERMANY

Life without star defensive midfielder Lena Oberdorf figures to be more challenging for the Germans as the competition stiffens. On Thursday, though, it was so far, so good.

Germany controlled the back, middle, and everywhere else in a 3-0 victory against Australia in its first Olympic action since Oberdorf (torn ACL) was injured on July 17 in a Euro 2025 qualifier.

The USWNT hopes Oberdorf’s absence means good opportunities and great results for its midfield and a deep forward group of Sophia Smith, Swanson and Rodman. Playing soft in the middle won’t be a good thing if it happens.

Expect the Americans to meet the challenge as new coach Emma Hayes nets her biggest victory to date.

NEW YORK YANKEES AT BOSTON RED SOX

Yankees lefty Carlos Rodon has righted the ship after pitching to a 7.76 ERA in five June starts. He’s 1-2 with a 4.43 ERA in four starts this month and is coming off a resurgent seven one-run innings against Tampa Bay on Monday, his first victory since June 10.

Rodon has traditionally been up-and-down against the rival Red Sox, though, going 2-4 with a 4.05 ERA in seven starts while permitting just under one hit per inning. Remember what you just read about June 10? Rodon followed that by yielding five runs and seven hits in five innings in his next start, at Fenway Park.
