Maharashtra News: An online gambling addict was taken into custody in Bhiwandi, Thane district, on Monday, according to a police officer. He was accused of killing a 74-year-old woman, stealing her gold jewellery, and setting the home on fire to destroy any evidence.
An officer from the Bhiwandi taluka police station stated that the incident happened on August 14 in Zatewada.
“Abhimanyu Gupta (35) attacked Sevamary Augustin Nadar when she was alone, slit her throat and fled with gold ornaments. He then set the house on fire to destroy evidence. We traced him to a lodge in Thane and arrested him on Saturday. He has been charged with murder and other offences,” the official said.
According to an investigation, Gupta plotted the theft at Nadar’s house because he was hooked to internet gambling and had lost more than Rs 2 lakh.

“Gupta had worked in the dairy run by the victim’s son, so he had details of the family etc. He has been remanded in police custody till August 28,” the official said.
In another incident, six people, including an Indian Army Agniveer, have been taken into custody in relation to the theft of jewellery and cash valued at more than Rs 50 lakh. The theft occurred when the man broke into a jewellery store in Bhopal and threatened the employee with a revolver.
The accused, Mohit Singh Baghel, a short-term contract soldier from Punjab, was on leave and had traveled to Bhopal to meet his brother-in-law, according to Bhopal Police Commissioner Harinarayanchari Mishra. Baghel had planned the heist with the intention of using the proceeds to settle his brother-in-law’s home lone and then treat himself to some fun, according to Mishra.
