PSG vs Montpellier predictions

A glance at the scoreline might appear to suggest that Paris Saint-Germain had an untroubled start to the 2024/25 Ligue 1 season. But their 4-1 victory over Le Havre was not quite as smooth as it may have seemed.

Lee Kang-in got the defending French champions off and running in the third minute, but Le Havre pegged PSG back shortly after half-time.

The score remained locked at 1-1 until the 86th minute when Ousmane Dembele put the away team back in front. Bradley Barcola and Randal Kolo Muani then scored in quick succession to add gloss to the scoreline.

In fairness to PSG, it would have been an injustice had they not emerged victorious. They created several chances throughout and could easily have put the game to bed much earlier.

This promises to be an intriguing season at the Parc des Princes. For the first time since 2016/17, PSG do not have Kylian Mbappe in their ranks.

Given Lionel Messi and Neymar had already departed the club, it is fair to say the club’s galacticos era is well and truly over.

That is not necessarily a bad thing. PSG’s squad no longer has as much star quality as it once did, but the club failed to win the Champions League using its previous approach. They even missed out on the Ligue 1 title to Lille in 2020/21 despite a huge financial advantage.

Despite the lack of a global superstar like Mbappe, Messi or Neymar, PSG’s squad contains plenty of talent. It has been bolstered this summer by the arrivals of Joao Neves, Matvey Safonov, Willian Pancho and Desire Doue.

Luis Enrique is determined to create a collective which is more than the sum of its parts. PSG have lacked coherence on and off the field for too long. Their Spanish coach is determined to change that.

Marseille look capable of mounting a challenge under Roberto De Zerbi. A competitive battle at the top of Ligue 1 would be positive for the division as a whole.

PSG are by no means invincible, but they remain the team to beat in France.

Paris Saint-Germain will be looking to make it two wins from two when they host Montpellier this weekend.

PSG/PSG half-time/full-time – 87/100 (Spreadex)

Nine years before Lille pipped PSG to the Ligue 1 title as mentioned above, Montpellier did the same. It was a remarkable achievement, but there is no chance it will be repeated this term.

It has been a difficult summer at the Stade de la Mosson, with Montpellier yet to make a single signing. That is despite the fact they have lost some of the players who were part of their squad last season.

Montpellier finished 12th in 2023/24. At one point they were involved in the relegation conversation in what is now an 18-team division, but a strong end to the season saw them pull into mid-table.

Montpellier drew 1-1 with Strasbourg last weekend, but they will struggle to avoid defeat at the Parc des Princes.

Back in front of their own supporters, it is hard to look past a comfortable PSG victory in Ligue 1’s Friday night fixture.

Over 3.5 goals – 5/6 (Spreadex)

Mbappe’s presence at the Parc des Princes last season meant Goncalo Ramos was not guaranteed a place in the starting XI.

The Portugal international was ready to become a more important figure in 2024/25, only for fate to cruelly intervene. Ramos injured his ankle against Le Havre and had surgery this week, ruling him out of action for a few months.

That is not only a personal blow, but one to Luis Enrique’s side as a whole. Still, there is no shortage of attacking quality in the PSG ranks.

Luis Enrique smartly limited Mbappe’s minutes in Ligue 1 towards the end of last season, citing the need for PSG to get used to playing without him.

They created an abundance of opportunities against Le Havre and, although they left it late, ultimately scored four goals. We could see another high-scoring affair here.

Bradley Barcola to score any time – 13/10 (Spreadex)

There is huge excitement in Paris over Bradley Barcola – and rightly so.

The 21-year-old, signed from Lyon in 2023, bedded in at PSG last season. Now he is ready to become one of their key men.

Even more than Ramos, Barcola stands to benefit from Mbappe’s exit. A left-sided forward, he came off the bench against Le Havre and is now pushing for a start.

Barcola’s ability is clear for all to see, but he will be aiming to become more productive in the final third having only scored four goals last term.

Having found the net last weekend, Barcola will be full of confidence ahead of Montpellier’s trip to the capital.
