Bournemouth vs Newcastle United predictions
Newcastle United’s opening-weekend game against newly promoted Southampton was tougher than many expected.
Fabian Schar’s red card with 28 minutes on the clock meant Newcastle were up against it, but it was nevertheless they who took the lead shortly before half-time through Joelinton.
Southampton had chances either side of the interval, but a combination of lacklustre finishing and stout Newcastle defending saw the match finish 1-0.
In a strange way, it was a more satisfying victory than a routine 3-0 triumph would have been. Newcastle had to work hard and conquer adversity to get their campaign off and running.
Eddie Howe was understandably delighted with the character his team showed and the Newcastle manager will want to see similar qualities when he faces his former club on Sunday.
A legendary figure at Bournemouth after taking the club from League Two to the top half of the Premier League, Howe has been linked with the England job in recent weeks.
Yet you cannot help but feel that Howe would miss the day-to-day contact with players that a club job affords him. And if Newcastle continue winning games, Howe will feel he can do something historic at St James’ Park, which is still waiting for a first major trophy since 1955.
There is certainly a feeling of cautious optimism around the city right now. Newcastle have been constrained in the transfer market by the Premier League’s financial rules, but they have kept hold of key assets such as Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes.
Their absence from continental competition could be a blessing in disguise, while they are highly unlikely to suffer the same bad fortune with injuries as they did last time out.
The fixture computer has handed Newcastle a relatively kind start to the campaign, with Tottenham Hotspur the only team they are due to face in their first five matches that finished in the top half in 2023/24.
Howe will want his team to continue building momentum on his third return to the Vitality Stadium.
Bournemouth vs Newcastle United betting tips
Bournemouth and Newcastle United will go head-to-head in the Premier League on Sunday.
Newcastle United to win – 6/5 (Midnite)
After a shaky start as the squad got to grips with new manager Andoni Iraola’s methods, Bournemouth steered well clear of relegation trouble last season.
Another mid-table finish is the goal in 2024/25. The Cherries got a point on the board on the opening weekend, drawing 1-1 with Nottingham Forest.
We could see the £40m acquisition Evanilson make his debut here, with the Brazilian intended to be Dominic Solanke’s replacement following the latter’s move to Tottenham.

But it will take a few weeks for the former Porto man to gel with his new team-mates, thus potentially making this a good time to face Bournemouth.
Newcastle had a poor record on the road last season and Howe knows his team must improve on opposition territory if they want to get back into the Champions League.
This is a chance for Newcastle to show they have made progress from last term.
⚽ Tip Newcastle United to win at 6/5 with Midnite ⚽
Draw at half-time – 6/4 (Midnite)
The score was level at half-time in 17 of Newcastle’s 38 games last season. Of the other teams that also finished in the top nine, only Chelsea’s figure was higher.
Meanwhile the Magpies were ahead in just five of their 19 matches on their travels. Howe’s side were not particularly fast starters on the road.
Bournemouth will be aware of that and, playing in front of their own fans for the first time since May, Iraola’s side will go on the front foot from the first whistle.
With their energy, intensity and hard-pressing, Bournemouth are tricky opponents. You have to earn the right to play against the Cherries, as this Newcastle side knows well: they lost 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium on their last visit there.
Even in that defeat, the score was 0-0 at the interval. We anticipate a tight first 45 minutes in this one.

Anthony Gordon to score any time – 7/4 (Midnite)
Gordon was mentioned as a potential transfer target for Liverpool earlier in the window, but there is no indication that he is about to leave Newcastle.
Needless to say, that is excellent news for Howe and co. Gordon was one of Newcastle’s standout performers last season – and not just because, unlike most of his colleagues, he was available for selection throughout the campaign.
Gordon reached double figures for both goals and assists in 2023/24, helping Newcastle to a top-seven finish despite the injury crisis.
The key now is to maintain that sort of form. That consistency is what separates the very best players from the rest.
Gordon has what it takes to shine against Bournemouth this weekend.
