The 2024/25 Premier League season is under way and the fight to avoid relegation has begun in earnest. The three promoted teams went straight back down last term, but there is reason to believe this season’s basement battle will be more dramatic.

Southampton are the likeliest team to go down to the Championship, but there will no doubt be plenty of twists and turns along the way. Here is our comprehensive guide to the Premier League relegation odds and more.

Every bookmaker has similar views on the teams that will be in the relegation conversation in the 2024/25 season. Here are the main contenders for the drop, featuring our analysis of each potential struggler.

Leicester City (2/5)

Leicester City won the Championship last season, after which they lost their manager (Enzo Maresca) and their best player (Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall). If that was not enough, the Foxes will almost certainly suffer a points deduction for a previous breach of the Premier League’s financial rules.

Leicester do have top-flight experience, though, and Steve Cooper previously kept Nottingham Forest’s heads above water. Even so, they are odds-on favourites for a bottom-three finish.

Ipswich Town (5/6)

Ipswich Town were playing in League One as recently as 18 months ago, but back-to-back promotions have brought them back to the promised land. Kieran McKenna, their much-admired manager, has signed a new contract and Ipswich are ready to attack the Premier League.

This team is capable of scoring goals at the highest level, but McKenna must find the right balance between attack and defence. Ipswich’s squad is also short on proven Premier League knowhow.

Southampton (17/20)

Southampton ascended back to the Premier League via the play-offs, as they upset Leeds United in the Wembley final. Russell Martin’s men play a possession-based brand of football and their manager will not change his ways in the top flight.

There is a danger, though, that savvier opponents will pick Southampton off, allowing them to control the ball before attacking the space. The Saints conceded a huge number of goals in the second tier last term and there are question marks up front too.

Everton (15/8)

Everton were deducted eight points last term, yet they still stayed up pretty comfortably. But the club remains in limbo off the pitch and the ongoing takeover saga means the Toffees have been restricted in the transfer market. That will make life difficult for Sean Dyche this season.

However, Dyche is a shrewd operator who kept Burnley up year after year. His team will not necessarily play the prettiest football this season, but they should be able to grind out enough results to finish above the dreaded dotted line.

Nottingham Forest (7/2)

It has been a quieter summer than usual at Nottingham Forest – and that is a good thing after too much chaos in recent years. Nuno Espirito Santo has some good players at his disposal, but in each of the last two seasons, Forest finished only just above the drop zone.

Forest were defensively vulnerable for much of last season, especially from set-pieces. That is something Nuno needs to sort out, while Forest must also improve on the road: their record away from home has been poor since promotion.

Wolverhampton Wanderers (5/2)

Financial considerations forced Wolverhampton Wanderers to cash in on Pedro Neto and Max Kilman this summer. That is cause for concern, as is the fact that Gary O’Neil’s side ended last season poorly. If they are not careful, Wolves could be dragged into a relegation battle.

There is still enough talent in the squad for them to survive, although Wolves fans are hoping for one or two more additions before the transfer window shuts. Another centre-back would not go amiss following Kilman’s exit.

Brentford (6/1)

Brentford are one of the smallest clubs in the Premier League, but they are now in their fourth season at the highest level of the English game. They are a well-run club behind the scenes and Thomas Frank is a smart head coach.

Brentford look set to lose Ivan Toney, their talisman over the last few years, before the end of the window. But the Bees have a good track record of replacing departed stars and they can continue punching above their weight this season.

Fulham (7/1)

It has been an exciting summer off the pitch at Fulham, who have not been afraid to splash the cash. Marco Silva is an underrated tactician and it is difficult to see the Cottagers being dragged into a battle at the bottom.

Indeed, Fulham will instead have their eyes on a top-half finish, although that will be difficult given how strong the Premier League is these days. Joao Palhinha will be a big miss, but Fulham have enough quality to survive.

Bournemouth (9/1)

Bournemouth struggled to get to grips with the demands of Andoni Iraola, their new manager, at the beginning of last season. But once the Spaniard had succeeded in transmitting his ideas to the players, the Cherries were superb.

Relegation could be more of a concern this season after the exit of Dominic Solanke, their top scorer in 2023/24. But with Iraola’s energetic and dynamic style of football, Bournemouth will have enough to survive.

Crystal Palace (9/1)

Crystal Palace finished 10th last season after a magnificent finish under Oliver Glasner. But they have since lost Joachim Andersen and Michael Olise, with Marc Guehi headed for the exit door too. Those are significant losses and this will probably be a transition year for Palace as a result.

It is difficult to see them going down, though. Glasner is an astute coach and there is still quality in the squad, which will surely be bolstered before the end of the transfer window.

Relegation treble – Southampton, Leicester City and Nottingham Forest (10/1)

Southampton were too defensively weak in the Championship last season and their possession-based game makes them vulnerable. A probable points deduction will harm Leicester City, while Nottingham Forest have flirted with the drop for two seasons on the bounce.

Southampton to finish bottom (odds)

Last season’s play-off winners are in danger of being too easy to play against at the highest level. Russell Martin’s men will struggle to be sufficiently effective in both boxes.

Winner/To finish bottom double – Arsenal and Southampton (18/1)

Arsenal came close to winning the Premier League title in 2022/23 and 2023/24, and they are ready to take the final step. As mentioned above, Southampton are set for a season of struggle.

Here is the 2024/25 Premier League table as things stand.

2023/2024 Premier League relegation vs promotion

For the first time since 1997/98, all three promoted teams were relegated to the Championship last season.

• 18th – Luton Town. The Hatters were the most competitive of the promoted trio and they pulled off some eye-catching results. But they were too open defensively and a poor end to the campaign led to their demise.
• 19th – Burnley. Vincent Kompany’s side were too easy to play against, even though they played some decent football at times. Burnley did not escape the bottom three all season long.
• 20th – Sheffield United. The Blades turned in a pitiful performance over 38 games, ending up with just 16 points to their name. Sheffield United set an unwanted Premier League record by conceding 104 goals.

The relegated clubs were replaced by Championship champions Leicester City, runners-up Ipswich Town and play-off winners Southampton.

History of Premier League relegation

In the first three seasons of the Premier League, the division contained 22 teams rather than 20. In those days, relegation battlers usually felt a haul of 45 points would be sufficient for survival. 

In the 20-team days, 40 points was seen as the magic number to reach. Yet in each of the last eight years, 36 points was enough 100 percent of the time. The last time a team amassed 40 points and went down was in 2002/03, when an unfortunate West Ham United team were relegated despite reaching 42.
