CLEVELAND, Ohio — Ohio’s sports betting companies reported taking in $477 million of bets in July, a large increase compared to last year.
Last July Ohioans bet just under $332 million in July, according to compiled data from the Ohio Casino Control and Ohio Lottery commissions.
The summer is a slow season for sports bets because of the lack of NFL and NBA action. However, bets were much higher this July than they were last summer. And the same was true for June, where 2024 saw $530 million in bets, up from $348 million in June 2023.
This July sportsbooks reported $55 million in revenue, up from just $37 million in July 2023. This is the money they kept after paying out winnings and voided wagers.
Through seven months, Ohioans have bet just under $4.6 billion on sports, up from $4.2 billion at this time last year. Revenue overall is down. The sports betting companies have reported $491 million of revenue so far in 2024, down from $577 million at this point in 2023.

What makes all of these numbers tricky is that promotional dollars — like the bet $5, get $200 in bonus bets deals seen in 2023 — are treated like real bets and real revenue in the data. Sportsbooks have given out less of these promotions in 2024.
Mobile apps are still king. So far 97% of bets in 2024 have been placed on apps, and they’ve accounted for 98% of the companies’ revenue.
Ohio taxes revenue as 20%, so 2024′s revenue figures means the state has collected roughly $98 million.
