Manchester City vs Brentford predictions

Before the beginning of the season, a few people wondered whether Manchester City would still have the hunger to scale the mountain once again after four consecutive Premier League title triumphs.

Coming out on top for four seasons in a row was an unprecedented achievement in the history of English football, so it was a reasonable question to ask.

The 2024/25 campaign is only a few weeks old, but on the evidence we have seen so far City’s appetite has not diminished one bit.

Three victories on the bounce have lifted Pep Guardiola’s side to the summit of the standings. They kicked off with a 2-0 triumph over Chelsea, before thrashing Ipswich Town 4-1 and beating West Ham United 3-1 in their last outing before the recent international break.

Liverpool have managed to keep pace with City so far, but Arsenal are two points back ahead of Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.

The following weekend City will host Mikel Arteta’s men, who finished as runners-up in 2022/23 and 2023/24.

Before then, Guardiola’s charges have the chance to make it 12 points from 12 when Brentford make the journey to the northwest of England. The Bees won at the Etihad Stadium the season before last, but the bookies do not give them much chance of repeating that feat this time around.

City are in ominous form already. That is a worrying sign for the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool. By their high standards, City were slow out of the blocks in both of the last two campaigns, before coming on strong after Christmas. This time they could be the early pace-setters.

Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne appear to be back to their best, Ilkay Gundogan has rejoined the club from Barcelona, and the likes of Phil Foden and John Stones have barely played so far this season.

If it was not already obvious, City have demonstrated in recent weeks that they are still the team to beat in the Premier League.

Manchester City vs Brentford betting tips

Manchester City are looking for a fourth win in succession when they face Brentford in the Premier League.

Manchester City -2 handicap – 5/4 (bet365)

You have to go all the way back to March to find the last time Manchester City did not win a Premier League game.

They have won all 12 of the fixtures they have contested since a 0-0 draw with Arsenal on the final day of that month. What is more, each of those victories has come by at least a two-goal margin.

As that sort of record indicates, it has been a while since anyone has even given City a game in the top flight. Alas for Brentford, they too are likely to be second best by some distance here.

The Bees have had a decent start to the campaign, beating Crystal Palace and Southampton at home while succumbing to defeat by Liverpool at Anfield.

Thomas Frank’s team continue to punch above their weight and they look to have enough to avoid the relegation battle this term.

On Saturday, though, they will be powerless to resist this in-form City side.

Over 3.5 goals – 10/11 (bet365)

Manchester City have an embarrassment of riches in the attacking part of the pitch.

Haaland will definitely start on Saturday, but it is difficult to predict who will be chosen as his support cast. Foden is pushing to be involved, while Gundogan could also be involved for the first time since 2022/23.

Regardless of exactly who starts, City are capable of scoring plenty of goals in front of their own fans.

Brentford could have some joy on the break via the likes of Yoane Wissa, Bryan Mbeumo and Kevin Schade, so do not rule out the visitors finding the net.

All things considered, it is easy to imagine this being a high-scoring affair as City look to maintain their grip on top spot.

Erling Haaland to score a hat-trick – 7/1 (bet365)

Haaland hit hat-tricks in back-to-back games against Ipswich and West Ham. He is now looking to become the first player in Premier League history to make it three trebles on the bounce.

Would anyone really be surprised if the Norway international secured another piece of history this weekend?

Brentford actually have a decent record of keeping Haaland reasonably quiet, with Manchester City’s frontman having only ever scored once against the team he is preparing to face this weekend.

But after a slight dip in form last term, Haaland has refound his mojo. An entire summer off while most of his peers competed at Euro 2024 or the Copa America has clearly done him good.

Notching a hat-trick in any Premier League game is not straightforward, but Haaland has long made scoring goals look easy.
