England are on the hunt for a new permanent manager after Gareth Southgate resigned from the hottest seat going.
He was in charge for eight years, taking the Three Lions to two major finals, but England’s hunt for silverware will go into a 60th year at the World Cup in 2026.
His contract was due to expire at the end of the year but, following their latest heartbreak, Southgate decided to pass the baton to someone else.
From Big Sam to Sven via Steve McClaren, Fabio Capello and Roy Hodgson, there’s been a broad church of styles, nationalities and outcomes for England managers and the only question now is, who’s next in line?
Here are the latest odds on who’s near the top of the next England manager betting.
Thomas Tuchel
The German is one of the names on the list who has experience of English football after a rollercoaster ride at Chelsea.
Thomas Tuchel is back in the running after leaving Bayern Munich following his failure to secure a trophy-laden campaign and the FA have reportedly opened talks for his signature.
Pep Guardiola
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is another to have allegedly been contacted by the FA amid suggestions he could depart the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season.
Whether he actually wants the job is another matter altogether.
Eddie Howe
Eddie Howe was linked with every job going before taking over at Newcastle. The former Bournemouth boss has done a fine job at St James’ Park after guiding the Magpies back to the Champions League for the first time in 20 years in 2023. But with the Magpies’ form dipping last season, question marks could be raised over his long-term future at St James’ Park.
Lee Carsley
Lee Carsley was handed the interim reins for England’s UEFA Nations League campaign after guiding the Three Lions to the European Under-21 Championship title last summer, while getting his crop playing attractive football.
He looked a shoo-in to get the permanent gig after masterminding comfortable victories over the Republic of Ireland and Finland in September, but the FA could look elsewhere following the surprise 2-1 defeat to Greece at Wembley in which Carsley’s decision to pick a load of attacking talent backfired.
Graham Potter
Former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter is biding his time for the right job as he bids to rebuild his reputation after a wretched spell at Stamford Bridge. He earned plenty of plaudits for his fine work at Brighton and his easy-on-the-eye style of play could prove popular with FA bigwigs.
Frank Lampard
Former Chelsea, Everton and Derby boss Frank Lampard is thought to be in the running to replace Southgate. He’s without a job at the moment and was last seen on the touchline at Stamford Bridge as an interim boss at the Blues.
