Sporting v Man City
Kick Off: Tuesday 5th November at 20:00
Competition: UEFA Champions League
The champions of Portugal meet the champions of England on Tuesday night when Sporting Lisbon host Manchester City.
It will be one of Ruben Amorim’s final games in charge of Sporting, having agreed to take over the post at City’s arch-rivals Manchester United. The Portuguese side have won ten out of ten in the league and two out of three in Europe, with one draw.
City come into the game on the back of a shock 2-1 defeat away at Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

What a way it would be for Amorim to make an impression with his new fan base by getting a result against Pep Guardiola’s side.
They are getting City at just the right time, with fixture congestion talk prevalent over the last few weeks, and with their squad stretched to around 14 available fully fit players. They’ve lost two games on the bounce, but even before that, they have been struggling to replicate the form of seasons gone by.
If you look at their domestic form, they’ve conceded against ten of their last 11 opponents, including Watford, with only Southampton failing to find the net. All of their last nine domestic games have been decided by the odd goal.
Sporting have beaten Lille and Sturm Graz in Europe, the former of which recorded a win over Real Madrid in their opening Champions League game. They will be in a buoyant mood given their sparkling domestic form and can hopefully cause an upset here.

🔍 Sporting v Man City Players to Watch
🟢 Morten Hjulmand
The Denmark international midfielder impressed at Euro 2024, catching the eye with his combative displays and a 30-yard screamer against England.
Besides his ridiculous long-range strike, his ability to pick up a card also shone through. He picked up 0.49 yellow cards per 90 in Liga Portugal during 23/24. During the tournament, he picked up two cards in three games.
So far this season, he has not picked up a single card for Sporting, but he’s continued to pick up yellows for Denmark in the Nations League, with two in two starts.
His lack of cards for his club this season may purely be down to not having encountered the most challenging opposition as of yet, and it will surely be Sporting’s toughest test of the season so far. Back him to be shown a card here.

🔵 Phil Foden
It seems like Phil Foden’s start to the season has been underwhelming.
Last term’s PFA players’ Player of the Year has not scored a goal yet in the Premier League and has only registered one assist. In Europe, he has two goals and one assist from three appearances, albeit against opposition far inferior to City.
What is consistent though is his desire to take a shot. These are his shot numbers when starting for City in all competitions: six, five, two, four, three, three, four. That’s an average of 3.86 per start.
Despite his reduced attacking numbers since the start of this season, we can be confident in Foden on racking up the efforts at goal in this competitive outing. Back Phil Foden to have three shots on goal in this fixture, a feat he has achieved in six of his seven starts.

💻 Sporting v Man City Form and Tactics
Sporting will line up in their familiar 3-4-3 formation. They usually play with an aggressively high line, which was exploited by Manchester City a couple of years ago in a 5-0 victory for the English Champions.
You would hope a tactician as apparently astute as Amorim would have learned his less from that day, and not afford the same level of space again.
Viktor Gyokeres is their star man. The former Coventry striker has scored 16 goals in ten Liga Portugal games, as well as two in three in the Champions League.
Pep will not deviate from his 4-3-3. He has very few options to try and freshen things up following the weekend defeat. Expect Jeremy Doku and Rico Lewis to come into the side, perhaps with Ake and Nunes making way.
