Sporting Lisbon vs Man City preview
Portuguese league leaders Sporting Lisbon welcome Manchester City to the Estadio Jose Alvalade as the Champions League continues this week.
And it’s a good chance for Ruben Amorim to endear himself to Manchester United supporters by getting one over their arch-rivals before officially starting his role at Old Trafford.
Sporting find themselves top of Liga Portugal ahead of Porto and Benfica after winning all of their 10 league games in the 2024-25 campaign.
Amorim’s side have been nothing short of amazing having scored 35 goals and conceded just three times.
Their form has also translated to the European stage having won two of their three outings (W2, D1) against Sturm Graz and Lille.
If they can avoid defeat here, they will equal their longest ever unbeaten run in the European Cup/Champions League (four games between September 1982-March 1983).
A clash with Manchester City wouldn’t seem the ideal encounter to equal that unbeaten run – but they might just have caught the Premier League champions at the ideal moment.
Without a host of first-team players available and a thin squad, the Cityzens suffered a 2-1 loss to Bournemouth over the weekend.
That shock defeat arrived just a few days after losing by the same scoreline to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup with Pep later describing his side as “in trouble” ahead of a crowded fixture list.
Saying that, the omens are stacked in City’s favour.
Manchester City have lost just one of their 10 major European matches against Portuguese opposition and only just set a new record for unbeaten games in the history of the European Cup/UEFA Champions League, going 26 without defeat (W18 D8).

Home goals
The pair have met before, and it didn’t pan out too well for Ruben Amorim’s side that evening. Sporting lost 5-0 in the knockout stages back in 2022 before drawing the reverse fixture 0-0 at the Etihad.
However, there’s very little chance of such a one-sided affair on Tuesday with both sides more than capable of scoring a handful on any given day. The visitors are stretched thin with injuries and Pep’s small squad are clearly showing signs of fatigue – so we’re backing the hosts to continue City’s alarming run of conceding 2+ goals at odds of 13/8 with William Hill.

Goalscorer
It’s not often that Erling Haaland features in a match and most pundits are talking about the opposition’s centre-forward. But there’s very good reason as to why Viktor Gyokeres is the talk of the town.
Gyokeres, 26, has struck 20 goals in 16 appearances in all competitions this season – including FOUR over the weekend against Estrela during a 5-1 victory.
He’s been directly involved in 10 goals in 12 appearances for Sporting in European competition (seven goals, three assists), while scoring in all four of his European starts at the Estadio Josw Alvalade.
