Greece vs England preview

England return to Nations League action with an extremely tough contest against Greece at the Olympic Stadium in Athens.

It’ll have been 65 days since Ivan Jovanovic’s underdogs pulled off a remarkable 2-1 victory against the Three Lions at Wembley.

That night, Lee Carsley’s all-out attacking strategy backfired as Vangelis Pavlidis netted twice in an encounter that saw Greece have the ball in the net five times only to see three ruled out for offside.

England followed that disaster with a 3-1 win over Finland, but they’ve now entered “must win” territory if they are to escape League B and return to the top table of the Nations League.

The Thee Lions currently sit second in their group, three points behind leaders Greece. A win by a two-goal margin will see them leapfrog their opponents on goal difference with one final game remaining.

A draw or defeat, and Greece are promoted based on their head-to-head record.

And a tough job has become even tough for Lee Carsley, who’s seen EIGHT players withdraw from the squad through injury.

Those include Chelsea pair Levi Colwill and Cole Palmer, Arsenal duo Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, Manchester City midfielders Phil Foden and Jack Grealish, Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale.

But there’s still plenty going in England’s favour.

They’ve won on all four of their previous trips to face Greece by an aggregate score of 9-1 and are unbeaten in their last seven away games.

As for Greece, they’ve climbed 12 places in the FIFA World Rankings up to 42nd since July and are the only side in League B with a 100% record in this year’s competition.

In fact, Greece are on the longest active winning run of any European nation in all competitions (5 games) and could win six consecutive matches for the first time since November 2013.

Goals? Nope.

This really could be an atrocious watch given the position Greece find themselves in. The hosts simply need a draw to secure promotion to League A for the first time in their history.

They also boast a pretty formidable defensive record. Greece have gone 286 minutes without conceding at home since Youssouf Fofana netted for France in November last year, with seven clean sheets in their last 10.

With England missing a host of first-team options and a new coach preparing to take charge – this is unlikely to be a treat for the neutral.

Offside

It’s perhaps a niche one, but I’m going for Greece talisman Vangelis Pavlidis to have Over 1 Offside during Thursday’s contest.

As witnessed in the reverse fixture at Wembley, Greece were more than happy to concede possession to England – who boasted 63% of the ball that evening.

They then looked to break quickly with Pavlidis their main outlet, who was caught offside FOUR times that evening. He also strayed offside against Ireland the game after that.
