1. The majority of holiday shoppers report that they haven’t started any of their gift shopping yet.
As Thanksgiving approaches, holiday shopping is poised to ramp up. New CivicScience data show that the majority of shoppers have yet to start any of their holiday gift shopping, while close to one-quarter have done only ‘a little’ so far. This year represents a noteworthy increase from the percentage who had not started shopping at this point last year and is approaching levels seen prior to the pandemic. It also aligns with recent CivicScience data suggesting a big Thanksgiving weekend for holiday shopping, as shoppers increasingly prioritize deals and promotions.

2. Pet owners are more likely to bring their pets along with them when traveling for the holidays this year.
As pet owners know, planning travel when you have a pet can be difficult. The latest CivicScience data exploring overall holiday season travel plans show that about 3-in-10 pet owners intend to travel during the holidays this year, which falls slightly below the one-third of the Gen Pop who are planning holiday trips.
Additional data among pet owners with holiday travel plans indicate a notable shift this year – fewer owners are reporting that they’ll be boarding their pets or hiring someone to watch them, opting instead to bring them along or to leave them with friends or family.
3. Sports betting reigns supreme, but online betting beyond sports isn’t just a man’s game.
While sports betting dominates the spotlight on online gambling, it’s far from the only thing people can wager on. In fact, consumers can bet on everything from election outcomes to the weather. New CivicScience polling finds that nearly 15% of U.S. adults use online betting platforms to bet on things other than sports, with similar participation rates among men and women.
A deeper look at online betting habits as a whole unsurprisingly shows the majority of bettors, led by men, report they’ve placed online wagers on sports. However, women appear more inclined to use online platforms to gamble on every other alternative studied, most notably weather events, financial markets, and TV ratings/movie box office sales.
