Arsenal vs Crystal Palace preview

The Carabao Cup takes centre-stage this week as Arsenal and Crystal Palace battle it our for a place in the semi-final draw.

It’s not a competition that’s been hugely successful for the Gunners, who’ve won it twice (1987, 1993) and reached six finals since it began in 1961.

But the bookies fancy Mikel Arteta’s side to end their 30-year wait for League Cup silverware having installed them as favourites to lift the trophy at Wembley in March 2025.

But first they’ll need to navigate their way past a resurgent Crystal Palace and shake off Saturday’s disappointing goalless draw with Everton.

The full-time whistle at Emirates Stadium on Saturday was met with a smattering of boos from Arsenal supporters having failed to capitalise on Liverpool dropping points.

Arsenal dominated possession with 76% and had 13 shots, but were unable to breakdown a resolute Everton backline.

But they remain difficult to beat having avoided defeat in their last eight games in all competitions (W5,D3) and boast a great recent history in meetings against the Eagles having won each of their last four by an aggregate score of 12-3.

Oliver Glasner will have different ideas.

After a rough start, the Austrian manager has turned things around at Selhurst Park with the Eagles having lost just one of their last nine with four wins – including a terrific 3-1 victory over Brighton on Saturday.

Senegalese winger Ismaila Sarr has been pivotal to that upturn in results and rise to 15th in the table with three goals and two assists in his last five league games.

Win to Nil

They might be struggling in attack, but there’s very little wrong with Arsenal’s defensive output. The Gunners have secured back-to-back clean sheets and haven’t conceded a goal on home turf since the 2-2 against Liverpool back in October!

The Eagles have also failed to find the net in four of their last five meetings with Arsenal.

Tackles

Will Hughes is Crystal Palace’s busiest midfielder, over the last four league matches anyway. He’s completed a whopping 20 tackles in his last 341 minutes of action, winning 70% of those.

So it’s no surprise that he’s conceded more fouls than any of his colleagues in that period (7) with one booking for his troubles. Given he’s averaging 5 tackles per game, we’re backing him to make Over 3 Tackles at 21/10 with William Hill on a night where Arsenal will no doubt see the majority of the ball.
