Arsenal vs Southampton preview

Arsenal return to domestic action with a Premier League encounter against Southampton.

It’s been a difficult start to life back in the top-flight for Russell Martin’s side, who are languishing in the bottom three.

The Saints have picked up just one point from their opening six matches having lost five and conceded 12 – including a 3-1 defeat to rivals Bournemouth on Monday.

But perhaps the most worrying thing is their lack of goals. Nobody has registered few than their 19 efforts on target, while they’ve also scored the fewest of any side in the division (3).

Southampton have underperformed their xG by almost five goals this season, with only Manchester United having a poorer record in the Premier League.

They also have the lowest shot conversion rate in the competition this term, and that’s not a good omen when visiting an Arsenal side they’ve failed to beat in their last 24 top-flight visits.

As for hosts Arsenal, it’s been a busy few weeks and last weekend’s dramatic victory over Leicester took many by surprise.

But Mikel Arteta’s side got things back on track when beating PSG 2-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday, and remain unbeaten in their last 40 Premier League home games against promoted sides (W35 D5).

Home comforts

Kai Havertz has scored six goals in his last six Premier League home games for Arsenal, scoring in each of his last four at the Emirates. The Germany international, 25, also opened the scoring against Paris Saint-Germain midweek to continue his three-game scoring streak.

Only Bukayo Saka has more touches in the penalty area during home league fixtures this season, and it’s the same story for shots on target. Havertz is averaging a shot every 19.3 minutes with a 55.6% shot accuracy. That bodes well against a Southampton side who’ve conceded more shots on target that any side this season (24).

Assist

The obvious selection for an assist this weekend would be Bukayo Saka, who’s provided five assists already this season and is likely to cause Southampton serious problems down that right channel.

He’s obviously the most likely, but if we’re looking for bigger value then defender Jurrien Timber could be the answer.

Ok, the 23-year-old has only provided one assist in all competitions this season – but only Saka has created more than his eight league chances at the Emirates this season.

He’s created a chance every 24 minutes on average at home in the Premier League and only four of his colleagues have more touches in the opposition final third.
