Aston Villa vs Bologna preview
This Champions League lark has all been very straightforward for Aston Villa.
Unai Emery’s side swept Young Boys aside with a dominant 3-0 victory in Bern before an historic 1-0 win over Bundesliga heavyweights Bayern Munich.
Should they win again against Bologna, the Villans could become only the third side to win their opening three games in the Champions League without conceding.
It would also see manager Emery pick up his 25th win in the Champions League, becoming the fifth Spanish manager to achieve as many wins in the competition.
And there’s good reason to think both of those records will be achieved given Aston Villa’s form.
They have suffered just one defeat in their opening 11 matches of the 2024-25 campaign, and that came against Arsenal in August.
Villa have won seven of their nine outings since, including an impressive 3-1 victory at Craven Cottage over the weekend to lift them into fourth position.
The same cannot be said for visiting Bologna, who’ve picked up just ONE victory in all competitions this season – although they have only lost twice. (W1, D7, L2).
They earned a point in a goalless draw against Shakhtar Donetsk in their Champions League opener, while Liverpool had to work extremely hard to secure a 2-0 win against the battling Italians at Anfield.

Stefan Posch could find himself in the referee’s notebook on Tuesday.
The Austrian, 27, has picked up one caution in Bologna’s opening two UCL fixtures, and no player in the competition has committed more fouls (7).
He’s inevitably going to be in the thick of the action at right-back with either Jaden Philogene or Jacob Ramsey flying down Villa’s left.
He also ranks joint-fifth of any player in Serie A for most tackles (20), and joint-13th for most fouls committed (14).
