There was plenty of debate over Vincent Kompany’s appointment as Bayern Munich manager during the summer.
It was clear that Kompany was nowhere near being the club’s first choice. Bayern only turned to the Belgian after moves for the likes of Xabi Alonso, Ralf Rangnick, Oliver Glasner and Julian Nagelsmann failed.
Kompany’s chances were also boosted by the fact he speaks German, something that is seen as a key requirement at the Allianz Arena.
The former Manchester City defender was still lucky to get the gig given he was relegated from the Premier League with Burnley last season. Given his good fortune, it was vital that Kompany got off to a good start in his new role.
He has done just that. Bayern thrashed Holstein Kiel at the weekend to make it three wins from three in the Bundesliga. They are the only team in the German top flight with a 100 percent record after RB Leipzig were held to a goalless draw by RB Leipzig last time out.
Kompany has been tasked with getting Bayern back on top in the Bundesliga this term following Bayern Leverkusen’s title triumph in 2023/24, but the powers that be at the Allianz Arena will also want to see the team go deep in the Champions League.
The Bavarians reached the semi-finals last term and were only narrowly beaten by Real Madrid over two legs. Despite their broader struggles, Bayern were not far away from European glory.
They will begin their challenge this time around with a home game against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday. The group phase has been replaced by a league phase in the revamped Champions League, and Bayern will be targeting a top-eight finish.
That would bring with it a place in the round of 16, whereas the sides that finish between ninth and 24th must contest the knockout stage play-offs.
Bayern will lock horns with Aston Villa, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain in the coming weeks and months, but for now they will be fully focused on Dinamo Zagreb.
