Best golf bets and expert advice for Wyndham Championship

The PGA Tour moves to North Carolina this week for the Wyndham Championship, which is the last chance players have to qualify for the mega-bucks FedEx Cup playoffs.

Next week the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings tee up in the first of the three playoff events, culminating in the season-ending Tour Championship at the end of the month, where a first prize of $25 million will be up for grabs in Georgia.

Some of those in attendance at the Wyndham are just looking to improve their FedEx position, with eyes on winning the Cup. Market leader Sungjae Im, 12/1 for Wyndham glory, is ninth in the FedEx standings.

Shane Lowry, jetting to North Carolina from the Olympics in Paris, is tenth on the FedEx list. The Irishman, clearly eyeing up a bumper Tour Championship payday, is 25/1 to win the Wyndham.

Defending Wyndham champion Lucas Glover is 75th in the FedEx standings and is among those needing a big week at Sedgefield Country Club just to make the playoffs.

Wyndham Championship Golf Tips

Billy Horschel to win & each-way @ 22/1

Sedgefield Country Club is one of Billy Horschel’s favourite PGA Tour venues and the experienced Floridian can be fancied to get into contention again in the Wyndham.

Horschel was fifth in the 2016 Wyndham, 11th in 2018, sixth in 2019, runner-up in 2020 and fourth last year. He relishes the classic fairways and greens test of Sedgefield and is playing well enough to tear the course apart.

The 37-year-old has arrived off his best ever Major result, having tied second in the Open Championship at Royal Troon, where he battled superbly in the tough Scottish weather. He was eighth in the US PGA in May and his confidence is high.

Horschel has won seven individual titles on the PGA Tour, including the Tour Championship, the WGC-Match Play and the Memorial. He looks like a big fish in a small pond this week and should go close to claiming his second Tour title of the year.

Si Woo Kim to win & each-way @ 22/1

Another player who has become used to banking healthy cheques at Sedgefield Country Club over the last decade is Si Woo Kim, who may provide the biggest challenge to Horschel over the next four days.

Kim won his maiden PGA Tour title in the 2016 Wyndham Championship, carding a second-round 60 on his way to an emphatic five-shot success, and he has been threatening a second Sedgefield success ever since.

Fifth place in the 2019 Wyndham was followed by third in 2020, then a play-off defeat in 2021, so it would come as no surprise should a fifth PGA Tour title arrive for Kim in North Carolina on Sunday.

Kim won the Sony Open at the start of last week and has been consistently solid since, including when finishing sixth in the Players Championship at Sawgrass in March.

He has been performing well this season in much better tournaments than the Wyndham.
