Betting apps are no good for Kentucky Derby

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – The fastest two minutes in sports returns this weekend.

The 150th running of the Kentucky Derby is Saturday.

While Maine legalized sports betting last year, equine enthusiasts interested in placing a wager on the event – those apps on your phone will do you no good this weekend.

“It’s a different set of rules. It’s regulated by a different part of the gaming control board, and so, yeah, it’s not on your Draft Kings, it’s not on your Caesars. You can come here in Bangor and bet on it though,” said Alton Buzzell, Hollywood Casino & Raceway marketing director.

While there aren’t any live races in Bangor Saturday, they will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. for anyone looking to pick the winner.

There are OTB locations in Waterville, Sanford, and Lewiston, too.

Officials in Bangor say they usually get a good crowd with people in their best derby attire.

And yes, they will be serving mint juleps.
