Bradford dubbed least fitness-friendly city in UK

According to research by Live Football Tickets, the city was given a score of 2.1 out of 10 for how exercise-friendly it is.

The study aimed to help those looking to kickstart a more active lifestyle see which cities may provide the best or worst environments for doing so.

The research took into account factors like the number of cycle paths, walking trails, and fitness facilities, along with air quality and average rainfall.

Bradford’s annual average rainfall was noted to be 1,057mm, among the highest in the study, and its average high temperature was recorded at 12.05°C, the lowest among the cities in the report.

This combination of factors made Bradford the least appealing city for outdoor exercise.

Birkenhead came in second to last with a score of 2.22 out of 10, offering few options for exercise with only 0.18 cycling paths, 0.25 walking trails, and 0.55 fitness facilities per 10,000 people.

Sunderland was not far behind with a score of 2.30, although it benefitted from the second lowest rainfall among the bottom 15 cities.

The experts at Live Football Tickets stressed the importance of staying active, especially during the winter months.

They said: “With shorter days and less sunlight, the colder months can leave us feeling sluggish and a little out of energy.

“However, staying inactive for too long can be bad for our mind and body.

“Exercise is key to combating this, as it boosts mood-enhancing endorphins and reduces stress hormones.

“Studies have also found that exercising in the cold helps boost the immune system, with pre-exercise shivering found to raise norepinephrine levels, which enhances our immune response.”

On the other end of the scale, Bath was crowned the UK’s best city for exercise lovers with a score of 9.09 out of 10.

The city boasts 8.97 walking trails per 10,000 people and has some of the cleanest air in the study.

Colchester and Cambridge took second and third spots respectively, both offering numerous fitness facilities and routes for walking and cycling.
