Celtic vs Rangers predictions

Old Firm matches are among the most fierce in the world, but they are also of huge consequence beyond local bragging rights.

Rivalries like Manchester United vs Liverpool, Boca Juniors vs River Plate, Juventus vs Inter and Fenerbahce vs Galatasaray are not always meetings between the two teams challenging for the title.

Since the emergence of Atletico Madrid as a third force in Spain, even Barcelona vs Real Madrid is no longer automatically decisive in the race for the championship.

When Celtic lock horns with Rangers, the outcome is pivotal to the season as a whole. No other team has finished in the top two of the Scottish Premiership since Aberdeen in 2017/18, and that was only because Rangers were still recovering from their relegation down the divisions. Celtic, incidentally, have not finished anywhere other than first or second since 1994/95.

There is extra spice this term. Celtic’s success last time out moved them onto 54 Scottish titles. Were they to triumph again this year, the Hoops would move level on 55 with Rangers. Needless to say, the Gers are desperate to stop that happening.

Celtic are the odds-on favourites with the bookies, which offer a price as long as 15/4 on Rangers topping the pile. But a favourable result this weekend would see those odds drop.

Celtic have made a strong start to the season, winning all three games without conceding a goal. They kicked things off with a confident 4-0 thrashing of Kilmarnock, before back-to-back away wins against Hibernian (2-0) and St Mirren (3-0). Brendan Rodgers’ side also beat Hibs in the League Cup.

Celtic will soon turn their attention to the Champions League. Rodgers has a fine domestic record across his two spells at Parkhead, but he has yet to make an impact in Europe. Celtic must do better in the revamped league phase. For now, though, they are fully focused on Rangers.

Celtic vs Rangers betting tips

The Old Firm returns for the first time in the 2024/25 season as Rangers travel across Glasgow to Celtic.

Celtic/Celtic half-time/full-time – 7/5 (SBK)

Rangers began 2024/25 with a 0-0 draw with Heart of Midlothian, before losing in the Champions League qualifying rounds to Dynamo Kyiv.

However, they followed up a nervy 2-1 defeat of Motherwell with a 6-0 demolition of Ross County last time out, as Philippe Clement’s team ran riot at their temporary home of Hampden Park.

Sunday’s assignment is immensely more difficult, though. Celtic finished eight points clear of Rangers last term, thanks in large part to their Old Firm record.

Rodgers’ team won three of the four league meetings between the pair, while the other was drawn. They also beat their arch-rivals in the Scottish Cup final. Had Rangers won two of those Premiership clashes, they would have been crowned champions in May.

That underlines the importance of this fixture, but it also shows that Celtic are a superior side to Rangers right now. They will look to make a fast start and use home advantage in their favour on Sunday.

BTTS and over 2.5 goals – 4/6 (SBK)

The Old Firm is always worth watching for its intensity, but there is reason to believe we will also see some good football this weekend.

That is not always the case in a high-stakes game such as this, but the meetings between Celtic and Rangers last season were mostly enjoyable.

Three of the four Old Firm fixtures in the Premiership in 2023/24 featured goals at both ends and at least three in total. The standout game was a 3-3 draw at Ibrox in April.

Interestingly, this particular selection would have paid out in each of their last three matches at Celtic Park, where Rangers have not simply sat back and hoped for the best.

Clement’s team had a man sent off in both away games last time out, so he will be looking for more discipline from his players. But even if Rangers do not bother the referee’s notebook, they can cause problems for Celtic’s backline.

Go for both teams to score and over 2.5 goals at 4/6 with SBK

Nicolas-Gerrit Kuhn to score any time – 7/4 (SBK)

Nicolas-Gerrit Kuhn chipped in with two Premiership goals in the second half of last season following his January transfer to Celtic.

He has already matched that tally in the current campaign, having found the back of the net against Kilmarnock and Hibernian.

The forward dropped down to the bench for the St Mirren game last weekend, but he should be back in the XI for the visit of Rangers.

Kuhn represents a smart outside pick in the goalscorer market, which is led by Kyogo Furuhashi.

The German has looked sharp so far this term and he will be desperate to make an impact in such a big game.

Tip Nicolas-Gerrit Kuhn to score any time at 7/4 with SBK
