CFL doesn’t want federal regulations on betting ads: Report

The Canadian Football League does not want the federal government regulating sports betting ads, according to a report.

Ambrosie pointed out measures the CFL and other leagues have put in place to regulate sports betting have been sufficient and the proposed legislation isn’t necessary.

“Having said that, we do not claim perfection on this or any other issue. We recognize in all we do we must remain open minded and continue to learn and evolve,” Ambrosie wrote.

In 2021, Canada legalized sports betting on single events. As of now, only Ontario has regulated private industry sportsbooks.

Three years ago, the CFL endorsed wagering on single games as long as players, coaches and officials were banned from placing bets.

“The integrity of competition means everything to us,” Ambrosie told the Commons justice committee at the time.

Revenues from single sports betting have skyrocketed in Ontario, with approximately $63 billion worth of wagers per year, according to I-Gaming Ontario.
