Chelsea vs Arsenal preview

Chelsea and Arsenal battle it out at Stamford Bridge with both sides locked on 18 points after their opening 10 Premier League fixtures.

Both trail league leaders Liverpool by seven points after recent wobbles, and both could really do with a statement victory in London on Sunday.

It’s perhaps more important for visiting Arsenal, who’ve endured a rough spell.

The Gunners have lost three of their last six games across all competitions, including successive defeats against Newcastle in the Premier League and Inter in the Champions League – both without scoring.

Arsenal bossed the possession statistics in both of those encounters, but lacked creativity and became somewhat predictable for their opponents.

Mikel Arteta will hope the fit-again Martin Odegaard can help with that having returned against Inter having been absent with an ankle injury since the end of August.

And the omens are certainly in his favour.

Arsenal have won three of their last four Premier League away games against Chelsea, while they’ve also won their last six top-flight London derby matches by an aggregate score of 22-3.

Chelsea, overall, have defied early-season doubters but they aren’t exactly flying at the moment.

Aside from their 8-0 demolition of Armenian minnows Noah on Thursday, they have only one win in their last four league games and were dumped out of there Carabao Cup against Newcastle.

Enzo Maresca’s side also have a habit of leaking goals at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have conceded at least once in each of their last six Premier League home games – their longest run without a home clean sheet from the start of a league campaign since 2011-12.

Involved

Both sides are desperate for a league win, and both have a habit of conceding. But Chelsea arrive the fresher of the two having been able to rest the entirety of their first team against Noah on Thursday.

One of those rested was Nicolas Jackson, who will hope to add to his tally of six goals and three assists in 11 appearances this season.

He’s also, as it happens, a fan of London derbies. Since the start of last season, Jackson has been involved in more London derby goals than any other player in the Premier League (10 goals, 2 assists), with his 12 involvements coming in his last nine such appearances.

Booked

Regular readers will know I’m always tempted by a Kai Havertz booking – especially in what could be a feisty London derby against his former club.

The Germany international, 25, was booked in his last top-flight clash against Newcastle taking his Arsenal tally to 15 cards in 67 games. He’s also conceded more fouls than any other Arsenal player with 19.
