2024 Copa America preview: Bolivia vs. United States odds, prediction, best bet

Bolivia has some of the longest odds to win this tournament and it’s easy to see why when looking at its recent results. La Verde has won just two of its last 12 matches over the previous year with victories over Andorra and Peru. Antonio Carlos Zago’s squad has lost three on the bounce, so it’ll be hoping for a stroke of luck against a Top 15-ranked team.

It’s been a mixed bag for the United States as of late, as well. The Stars and Stripes coasted to another Nations League triumph with a win over Mexico, they drew with Brazil but also lost to Colombia and Slovenia. Gregg Berhalter’s job is under fire again so a solid Copa America campaign is needed.

Let’s take a closer look at the odds and trends ahead of this highly anticipated Copa America clash:

Bolivia vs. United States

Time/TV: Sunday, June 23 at 5 p.m. CT (Fox)

Location: AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas

Moneyline: Bolivia +1600| Draw +600 | United States -650

Analysis: Many are quick to write off Bolivia given its current form, but La Verde has given some notable opponents issues over the last few months. Zago’s team made Mexico earn a 1-0 win over it and even heavily tested Algeria earlier in the year during a 3-2 defeat.

While Bolivia doesn’t have any household names in its ranks, it has a unique advantage that often gets overlooked at the international level. Similar to a Saudi Arabia team that punched above its weight at the 2022 World Cup, most of La Verde’s roster plays in the Bolivian top flight. This familiarity with one another creates a bond that most international teams lack.

The United States cannot overlook its opponent or Berhalter’s side runs the risk of repeating the recent Colombia result.

The Stars and Stripes will look to control possession throughout, which Bolivia seems happy to let them do. The issue is getting back to defend when losing the ball. Colombia exploited the United States’ lackluster defending in transition as it hit the hosts out for five goals, despite a minority of possession.

Luckily for Berhalter, his side was significantly better against Brazil with an improved three-man midfield of Weston McKennie, Yunus Musah and Gio Reyna. This is the more attack-minded trio fans should expect to see in matches where the Stars and Stripes will see a lot of the ball. Otherwise, McKennie or Reyna will likely drop to the bench in favor of Tyler Adams.

In the end, this is a match that the United States simply has to win. Berhalter’s bunch is unquestionably one of the favorites to get out of Group C — as evidenced by its -490 odds — but a slip-up against either Bolivia or Panama could prove to be catastrophic.

The Stars and Stripes have too much quality in the three-man attack of Folarin Balogun, Christian Pulisic and Timothy Weah to be held down against La Verde. I doubt it’ll be a perfect display from Berhalter’s group and they could concede, but overall, it’ll be a comfortable win for the hosts.

Prediction: Bolivia 1-3 United States

Best bet: Timothy Weah anytime goalscorer (+200 at FanDuel Sportsbook)
