Crystal Palace vs Chelsea preview

An intriguing encounter awaits as Crystal Palace host London rivals Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.

And on paper, it should see a comfortable victory for Enzo Maresca’s side.

Crystal Palace’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the reverse fixture in September ended a run of 13 consecutive Premier League defeats against the Blues.

Chelsea have won 12 of their 15 Premier League away games against Crystal Palace, which is the joint highest away win rate any side has against another in the competition.

The Eagles have also lost their opening league match in each of the last three calendar years by an aggregate score of 12-2. All three of these matches have been London derbies.

However, after a run of eight successive wins that saw them installed as second-favourites for the title – Chelsea are winless in three.

A goalless draw with Everton was followed by back-to-back defeats to Fulham and Ipswich Town, who registered their first home win since promotion.

The Blues have now blanked in each of their last two away fixtures and another defeat could see them drop out of the Champions League places if results go against them this weekend.

Stats aren’t on Crystal Palace’s side, but recent form is.

Oliver Glasner’s side have lost just two of their last 11 Premier League games, and their eight points from the last five matches (W2, D2, L1) has them sixth in the form table.

They are also eighth for xG in that spell (9.35) with a better xGC (expected goals conceded) than their opponents this weekend (8.22 vs 10.46).

Eberechi Eze looks a good price at 19/5 to score Crystal Palace’s opener on Saturday. The England international, 26, got on the scoresheet against Southampton last week and now has five goals in the 2024-25 campaign despite missing four games through injury.
