England vs Finland predictions
Despite reaching the final of Euro 2024, England have no chance of lifting the Nations League trophy next summer.
Their relegation from League A last season means the Three Lions are only in the second tier of the competition this time around, with the Republic of Ireland, Greece and Finland for company.
That is not ideal. The Nations League was designed to give teams the chance to pit their wits against opponents of a similar calibre.
It would have been more valuable for England to be facing the likes of France, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands and Germany as they begin the process of building for World Cup 2026.
Secretly, though, Lee Carsley must be delighted that England are in League B. Initially appointed as the successor to Gareth Southgate on an interim basis, the Under-21 head coach is now the bookies’ favourite to land the job full-time.
Winning all six Nations League fixtures would do him no harm whatsoever. Indeed, there may even be a clamour for Carsley to get the permanent gig if England turn on the style between now and November.
Defeats in League A, conversely, would surely have made it less likely for the former midfielder to be handed a contract. With few other candidates out there, this is Carsley’s job to lose.
He got his temporary reign off to a positive start at the weekend, as England beat the Republic of Ireland (the nation Carsley represented as a player) 2-0. To add insult to Irish injury, the goals were scored by two of their former players, Declan Rice and Jack Grealish.
It was a comfortable triumph for England, who demonstrated their superiority in all areas of the pitch. Perhaps the only disappointment was the relative narrowness of the margin of the victory. On the balance of play, the visitors to Dublin could easily have won big.
Attention now turns to the visit of Finland on Tuesday. England have never lost to their upcoming opponents, with this set to be their first meeting since 2001.
England vs Finland betting tips
England can make it two wins from two when Finland head to Wembley Stadium this week.
England -2 handicap 6/5 (bet365)
Finland did not qualify for the European Championship this summer after finishing third in their group, four points behind both Denmark and Slovakia.
Their performance in the previous edition of the Nations League, in which Finland came second in their League B group, provided them with a second bite of the cherry, but a 4-1 play-off loss to Wales ended their hopes of going forward to Germany.

More recently, Finland were beaten 3-0 by Greece on Saturday. All of this suggests they will struggle to avoid defeat by England on matchday two.
This is not a friendly, so Carsley will resist the temptation to experiment and will instead name a strong side. We may even see the exact same XI that put the Republic of Ireland to the sword last time out.
If Greece are able to beat Finland by more than two goals, England should be able to as well
⚽ Back England with a -2 handicap at 6/5 with bet365 ⚽
England to win to nil – 4/6 (bet365)
Carsley went for a centre-back partnership of Marc Guehi and Harry Maguire in Dublin. In truth England’s entire defence was not put under too much pressure. Ireland mustered just one shot on target from their 24 percent possession.
There is reason to believe this could be an even more dominant display from the Three Lions. Home advantage is a major factor in football and Finland will find it difficult to even get a foothold at Wembley.
There were often criticisms levelled at England’s attacking output during Southgate’s tenure, but the team was at least mostly solid at the back.
That attribute will not have been lost since the change in manager, while Finland lack the firepower to cause England serious problems. Teemu Pukki, their all-time leading scorer, is now 34 years of age and playing in MLS.
⚽ Tip England to win to nil at 4/6 with bet365 ⚽
Bukayo Saka to score any time – 7/4 (bet365)
Bukayo Saka has been around for years now, so it is easy to forget that he is still only 23.
He celebrated his birthday two days before the Republic of Ireland game and will be looking to get back among the goals on Tuesday.
Saka has long been one of England’s most reliable performers, even though he does not get the same level of attention as players like Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham.
He has started the Premier League season well for Arsenal and will be a thorn in Finland’s side throughout this match, presuming he starts as expected.
At the odds listed, this bet represents excellent value. Saka can make his mark in his home city on Tuesday.
⚽ Go for Bukayo Saka as an anytime scorer at 7/4 with bet365 ⚽
