Euro 2024 Round of 16 picks: Best bets for Italy, Germany on Saturday

The first day of the Round of 16 action pits Switzerland against reigning tournament champions Italy, and Germany (fourth in outright odds) against Denmark. Only Germany won its group, while the other three finished second.

The Italians might not be playing at the same level they did during their successful Euro 2020 conquest, but they only lost once in nine matches since last October, which was against Spain (second in outright odds).

The Swiss team made a splash in the last Euros by upsetting France in the Round of 16 on penalties but will be hard-pressed to complete a similar upset this time given the level of talent disparity they are facing.

Italy also has experience and top penalty takers (and an elite goalkeeper) if the match extends that far.

Germany finished the group stage with seven points after it beat Scotland and Hungary and drew with Switzerland. They have an intelligent and technical squad that features playmakers on the wings and passing architects in the heart of the pitch, plus they are playing on home soil.

Denmark has been a popular upset pick for the last few years and is yet to lose in this tournament. At the same time, they are also yet to win, as they drew against Slovenia, England and Serbia. They rely on a defense that plays five at the back and will carefully pick their spots in attack.

Germany impressed during the pre-tournament build-up and looked like one of the top teams at the tournament during its opening matches. We like them to win what will probably be a low-scoring affair.
