Girona vs Barcelona predictions
Barcelona could not have asked for a better start to the new La Liga season.
As is customary in the capital of Catalonia these days, there was plenty of noise surrounding the club over the summer.
There was the fallout from Ilkay Gundogan’s surprise exit after just one year in Spain, plus the drama over Dani Olmo’s registration and links with various other players.
Hansi Flick, appointed as Xavi Hernandez’s successor ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, must have been relieved when the actual football got under way.
On the pitch, everything has gone well for Flick so far. The German has overseen four victories on the bounce, as Barcelona have put Valencia, Athletic Bilbao, Rayo Vallecano and Real Valladolid to the sword.
The first three wins were each by a 2-1 scoreline before the Blaugrana really turned on the style against Valladolid immediately prior to the international break.
A 7-0 triumph not only kept Barcelona at the summit of the standings heading into the Nations League fixtures; it also demonstrated that a title tilt may well be possible after all.
There is still a long way to go this season, of course, but Real Madrid have had a mediocre start and Barcelona will be aiming to open up a bigger lead in top spot before Carlo Ancelotti’s side get their act together.
Barca are a club obsessed with their own identity and mythology. In many ways that is understandable and at times it is worthy of celebration. How many other sides would have picked an inexperienced Pep Guardiola as their manager in 2008?
Yet perhaps Barcelona went too far down that road in recent years. Right now, Flick is showing the value of being an outsider. He does not speak Spanish, never mind Catalan, and has no prior history at Barcelona.
That has allowed him to detach himself from what is an incredibly intense environment, one which burnt out Guardiola after four years and Xavi even quicker. For the time being at least, Barca are all the better for it.

Two of last season’s top four go head-to-head as La Liga returns after the September international break.
Barcelona to win – 8/11 (BetMGM)
It will be intriguing to see how Girona perform this season.
They were above Barcelona in the table for much of last season, and although they ultimately dropped out of the two and finished third, that was a phenomenal achievement. The countdown for their first ever Champions League game, against Paris Saint-Germain, is on.
A draw with Real Betis and a loss to Atletico Madrid represented a disappointing opening to the current campaign for Girona, before they registered back-to-back triumphs over Osasuna and Sevilla to get off the mark for 2024/25.

There is not much of a rivalry between these two Catalan sides. In fact, the city of Girona has traditionally been a rich source of Barcelona fans.
They would still love to put a spanner in Flick’s works this weekend, but we fancy an in-form Barcelona team to get the job done 100 kilometres up the road.

Under 2.5 goals – 11/8 (BetMGM)
Each of Barcelona’s four games to date has featured more than 2.5 goals, so this may seem like a curious pick at first glance.
Yet we should probably expect a tight encounter. Barcelona may have blown Real Valladolid away last time out, but that match took place in front of their own fans.
It was also against an inferior side to Girona, who showed last season that they can even cause Spain’s best teams issues. Indeed, Barcelona lost both meetings 4-2.
Flick will be determined to ensure his side are not so defensively open this time around. That was a shortcoming in the latter part of the Xavi era and it is one that needs to be rectified if Barcelona are to get back to winning silverware on a regular basis.
Girona will give this a good go, but that does not necessarily mean we will see a repeat of the six-goal thrillers everyone enjoyed last time out.

Raphinha to score any time – 49/20 (BetMGM)
Raphinha has had a wonderful start to the season. In fact, no Barcelona player has outperformed him up to now.
The former Leeds United winger notched a hat-trick against Real Valladolid last time out, completing a remarkable turnaround from a point when many Barca fans would have been happy to see him depart.
Flick’s style of play seems to suit Raphinha, who has got his confidence back after a difficult spell last term.
Barcelona must have been pleased that the Brazilian was not called up to represent his country over the international break.
Raphinha will be fresh for Sunday – and that is bad news for Girona.
