Vincent Kompany has had a decent start to life as Bayern Munich manager. In his first two games as a Bundesliga coach, the Belgian oversaw a 3-2 victory over Wolfsburg followed by a 2-0 defeat of Freiburg.
Bayern have not been perfect so far. They rode their luck at times against Wolfsburg in particular, and needed a late goal from Serge Gnabry to wrap up all three points.
Similarly, the game against Freiburg was in the balance right up until the 78th minute, when Thomas Muller doubled his team’s lead.
Things are about to get harder too. Bayern will be reasonably confident of getting the better of Holstein Kiel this weekend, but they will also have an eye on the start of their Champions League campaign.
Dinamo Zagreb are their matchday one opponents in Europe, but upcoming clashes with Aston Villa, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain will provide a sterner test of Bayern’s credentials.
Kompany is unlikely to be given the benefit of the doubt for too long if results start to dip. In his previous job he was relegated from the Premier League with Burnley.
It is hard to shake the feeling that Kompany would not have been given the job at the Allianz Arena if he had not been a big-name player and if he did not speak German. Even then, he was only approached after moves for the likes of Xabi Alonso, Jurgen Klopp, Ralf Rangnick, Julian Nagelsmann and Oliver Glasner failed.
Yet if Bayern can open up a lead at the top of the Bundesliga and pick up some eye-catching wins in Europe, Kompany could yet be a success.
The fact that Bayer Leverkusen lost their long unbeaten run immediately prior to the international break may indirectly help the Bayern boss. Opponents will no longer feel Leverkusen are invincible, while Alonso’s side are about to be tested in the Champions League too.
Bayern will host Leverkusen at the end of this month in a game which could have a huge say on the title race, even at this early stage of proceedings. For now, though, their focus is on Holstein Kiel.

It was a historic achievement: this is the first time ever that the club from the far north of Germany (Kiel is less than 100 kilometres away from the border with Denmark) are competing in the country’s top flight.

Marcel Rapp’s team only narrowly lost to Hoffenheim on matchday one, going down 3-2 in their maiden outing at this level. The following week Kiel suffered a 2-0 home defeat by Wolfsburg.
It has therefore been a tough start to life at the top table, but Rapp would have expected nothing less. And to put a positive spin on things, Kiel were not exactly blown away by either Hoffenheim or Wolfsburg.
They may well be by Bayern Munich, however. Given the gulf in quality between the two teams, this looks set to be a one-sided contest.

Bayern Munich outscored both Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart last season, yet they finished below both teams in the table after 34 rounds of fixtures.
That was chiefly because of their deficiencies at the other end of the field. Bayern were poor defensively for too much of last term and it ultimately cost them big time.
Kompany has been tasked with making the team more solid as the Bavarians attempt to reclaim their Bundesliga crown.
Bayern kept a clean sheet against Freiburg a fortnight ago, but they are still giving up too many chances. Indeed, their two opponents up to now have registered a combined 2.9 xG against Kompany’s men.
Yet Bayern are likely to dominate this match to such an extent that Kiel will find it hard to generate many opportunities.

Bayern Munich’s front four of Serge Gnabry, Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise and Harry Kane is right up there with anything in Europe.
Of that quartet, Olise is the only one still waiting for his first goal of the season, but it is only a matter of time before the former Crystal Palace man, who made his full debut for France in the international break, gets off the mark.
We like the look of Gnabry as a goalscoring pick for this game. Starting on the left with a licence to drift infield onto his stronger foot, the German will cause Holstein Kiel plenty of problems.
Last season was disappointing for Gnabry, who only made 10 league appearances due to injury. He will be keen to make up for lost time this season.
