Indonesian police apprehend suspect on W88 online gambling wanted list

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Directorate of Cyber Crime (Dittipidsiber) of Indonesia’s National Police Criminal Investigation Unit arrested one suspect on the wanted list (DPO) in the W88 online gambling case.

“We secured one suspect from the DPO,” Director of Cyber Crime of the National Police Criminal Investigation Unit Brigadier General Himawan Bayu Aji confirmed on Thursday.

However, Aji did not detail further information regarding the suspect and only confirmed the arrested DPO was related to the W88 online gambling site.

Based on the information gathered, his team will pick up the suspect on Thursday night at Terminal 3 of the Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang, upon arrival from the Philippines.

In June, the Directorate of Cyber Crime of the National Police Criminal Investigation Unit blew the lid off three online gambling sites — 1XBET, W88, and Liga Ciputra — by arresting 18 suspects. The money turnover from the three sites was estimated to reach Rp1,041 trillion (USD63 billion).

According to Aji, the three gambling sites could be accessed in other countries and also in Indonesia. Hence, they were related to several countries.

He explained that gambling activities on the 1XBET and W88 sites began with the registration of deposits by players. After the deposit was made, it was sent to a foreign country.

“We got proof of delivery from the expedition of payment instruments used in other countries,” he stated.

Furthermore, the money was routed again to an exchanger and then sent to a money changer in Batam.

“The money changer used to exchange rupiah for digital assets in cryptocurrency, making it easier to send from Indonesia to other countries,” he remarked.

Furthermore, the digital assets are being sent back to the exchanger abroad and can be cashed out by the suspects in foreign countries.
