Influencers promoting online gambling face govt heat

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has teamed up with the National Police to block the accounts of social media influencers promoting online gambling.

Director general of public information and communication at the ministry, Prabu Revolusi, on Friday said that his office has sent data on such influencers for blocking to the National Police.

“Including (a list of) influencers blocked due to the online gambling promotion,” he informed.

According to Revolusi, the ministry has been proactively and periodically blocking social media accounts found promoting online gambling and reporting them to the police.

Since the formation of the online gambling eradication desk, whose members have been drawn from several ministries and institutions, the police have arrested 85 influencers for promoting online gambling and named them as suspects.

Confirming this to ANTARA, Revolusi said that the arrest of the influencers was a follow-up to the blocking of accounts by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs.

Furthermore, the online gambling eradication desk has also blocked more than 8 thousand keywords related to online gambling on various platforms.

Cumulatively, in the period from 2017 to November 20, 2024, the Ministry of Communication and Information blocked 5,204,753 items of content related to online gambling, he informed.

In the one month since President Prabowo Subianto took office (October 20 to November 20, 2024), the ministry has blocked 325,385 items of content related to online gambling.

They comprise 299,587 items on websites and IPs; 14,116 items of content/accounts on the Meta platform; 7,075 on file-sharing platforms; 2,920 items of content on Google/YouTube; 1,507 on the X platform; 129 on Telegram; and 50 on TikTok.

Revolusi said that while tightening cyber patrols to detect online gambling, his party has also opened a complaint channel for the public to report negative content, including online gambling.

The complaints can be filed on several platforms, such as the aduankonten.id website, as well as via instant messaging number 08119224545 and online gambling chatbot number 081110015080.
