Is Conor McGregor’s UFC Return Fight Canceled?

Irish MMA star Conor McGregor is scheduled to make his return to the cage on June 29 at UFC 303 in Las Vegas against Michael Chandler, but the internet is abuzz with speculation that the fight is off.

McGregor last fought in 2021, suffering a loss and breaking his leg in the process.

The speculation started when the UFC canceled a planned Dublin press conference with McGregor about 12 hours beforehand.

“In consultation with the UFC, today’s press conference was canceled due to a series of obstacles outside of our control,” McGregor said on X. “I apologize to my Irish fans, and fans around the world, for the inconvenience and appreciate all your passion and support. I can’t wait to put on the greatest all-time show in the Octagon.”

McGregor press conferences are popular events drawing thousands of fans regardless of location. Many MMA fans had booked travel to the press conference.

Chandler reportedly put out a cryptic post on his Instagram suggesting that he was leaving Florida, where he has been training, ending the post with “walk on.” Many fans took it to mean he had suspended his fight preparation.

Former UFC champion and current pay-per-view color commentator Daniel Cormier said on ESPN that he’s getting a vibe from within the UFC that the fight is in jeopardy.

“I have reached out to many in the organization to try and find out what happened [with the press conference], and when everybody is tight-lipped as they are right now, to me that tells me it’s a little worrisome.”

The fight is still posted on sports betting sites, with the bout being 50-50 regarding the odds.
