The Jayhawks compete in the Big 12 and have been playing football since 1890. They’ve had mixed results on the gridiron, losing more games than they’ve won but winning nine conference titles and seven bowl games.
The Jayhawks have had far more success on the hardwood, building one of the most successful college basketball programs in the country. A four-time national champion and six-time runner-up, Kansas has won the most conference titles in the nation and holds the record for most consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (28), which it accomplished from 1990 to 2017.
The Jayhawks’ first basketball coach was James Naismith, the inventor of basketball.
Known as “K-State,” the Wildcats also compete in the Big 12. They’ve had more success than Kansas on the gridiron, winning seven conference titles and 12 bowl games. In 2022, the Wildcats won the Big 12 and made their first Sugar Bowl appearance.
Kansas State has yet to win a national championship in basketball but finished runner-up in 1951. The Wildcats have made four Final Four appearances and recently made it to the Elite Eight in 2023. They’ve also won 19 regular-season conference crowns and two conference tournaments.
The Shockers compete in the AAC but do not have a football team, making them the only member of the FBS without one. The program was cut in 1986 but is known for producing legendary NFL coach Bill Parcells.
The men’s basketball team has made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances but has never won a national championship. The Shockers have made several deep tournament runs, reaching the Final Four twice, the Elite Eight four times and the Sweet 16 six times. They’ve also won four conference tournaments.
