Leicester vs Man City preview

Manchester City and their previously all-conquering side continue to toil.

Pep Guardiola’s champions failed to beat Everton on Boxing Day with misfiring Erling Haaland seeing a second-half penalty saved by Jordan Pickford.

The players trudged off to a smattering of boos from their supporters, who’ve now watched their side register one victory in their last 13 games in all competitions.

The Cityzens sit in seventh position with 28 points – 14 points behind league leaders Liverpool and 14 ahead of 18th-placed Leicester City.

It’s possible that Guardiola’s side could finish 2024 as low as 10th if they lose and results go against them, and that’s not inconceivable given they’ve lost seven of their last eight away matches.

However, they meet a side who are also enduring a difficult spell.

After a very brief “new manager bounce,” Leicester find themselves inside the relegation zone after three-consecutive defeats to Newcastle, Wolves and Liverpool.

The Foxes conceded 10 goals in those defeats, but perhaps more worrying is their inability to prevent shots having shipped 101 efforts on their goal since Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s arrival – the highest of any side in the division.

Van Nistelrooy’s first five games in charge have yielded just four points and things don’t get any easier with games against Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Fulham and Tottenham on the horizon.

Er Brace

Erling Haaland should get himself on the scoresheet against the joint-worst defence in the Premier League. Leicester have conceded a whopping 40 goals this season and, as mentioned, have shipped 101 shots on their goal during Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s five-game tenure.

Only Tottenham and Southampton have a higher xGC (expected goals conceded) over the last five matches, while the Cityzens still boast the fifth-highest xG in the division and the most number of goal attempts (318).

Haaland was distraught with himself for missing that penalty against Everton on Boxing Day and will want to make amends on Sunday.

Carded

Leicester have received the third-highest number of bookings in the Premier League this season with 48, and have conceded 201 fouls since the beginning of the campaign.

And during Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s tenure, no player has received more bookings (6) than midfield enforcer Boubakary Soumare. No Leicester player has committed more fouls than the 25-year-old (6) nor does anyone have more ball recoveries (23).
