Lille vs Paris Saint-Germain predictions

It is a well-known fact that winning the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history is an obsession for Paris Saint-Germain.

After the exit of Kylian Mbappe over the summer, this is seen as a transitional season for the club from the French capital. Expectations are reduced, at least in continental competition.

Just as well. The draw for the league phase of the tournament took place on Thursday – and it was not kind to PSG.

Luis Enrique’s side will face Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid in the first stage of the Champions League. Even meetings with the likes of Stuttgart, PSV, Girona and Red Bull Salzburg will not necessarily be easy.

For now, though, PSG must ensure they are fully focused on their final Ligue 1 outing before the September international break. Lille are not opponents that can be taken lightly.

Both of these teams have made fine starts to the new campaign, which is why this promises to be an intriguing affair on Sunday night.

PSG kicked things off with a 4-1 victory over Le Havre. Their final three goals came late on in that clash, but it was a fully deserved victory for the champions. They then thumped Montpellier 6-0 in gameweek two to take top spot on goal difference.

Monaco, Lens and Lille also have six points to their name. The latter won 2-0 at Reims on the opening weekend, before defeating Angers by the same scoreline. Needless to say, this will be a much stiffer test of Lille’s credentials.

PSG were superb against Montpellier last weekend. They took 27 shots, dominated possession and scored six goals via four different players. Now that they do not have to run everything through Mbappe, Luis Enrique’s team actually look freer and, dare we say it, happier.

“I don’t think you saw one star but 16 who came out to fight for Paris Saint-Germain’s colours: 16 stars in attack, 16 stars in defence. That is what perfection is,” the manager said after the win. Watch out Lille.

Both teams have won two games so far – will either Lille or PSG maintain their 100 percent record here?

PSG to win – 4/5 (Kwiff)

The only team to have prevented PSG winning the Ligue 1 title in the last seven seasons is Lille.

Les Dogues topped the table in 2020/21 under Christophe Galtier, whose team amassed one more point than the Parisians to claim the prize.

Notwithstanding Lille’s solid opening to the season, which includes successful navigation of the Champions League qualification rounds, history is unlikely to repeat itself this season.

Across 90 minutes, though, Lille are capable of causing PSG problems. They finished third last season and have kept hold of Jonathan David, although Paulo Fonseca left for AC Milan and was replaced in the dugout by Bruno Genesio.

Still, we reckon PSG will edge out Lille in this one. Luis Enrique’s side have really caught the eye up to now and they can extend their winning run to three games here.

Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals – 10/11 (Kwiff)

Lille are yet to concede a goal in Ligue 1 this term but that run will probably come to an end this weekend.

PSG have an abundance of attacking quality to call upon and it is surely only a matter of time before they make the net bulge.

But Lille pack a punch going forward themselves. David is still at the club despite again being linked with a departure this summer, while further threat is provided by Osame Sahraoui, Ethan Mbappe (Kylian’s brother) and Angel Gomes, who is in line to make his England debut in the upcoming international break.

We anticipate goals at both ends and at least three in total in the standout fixture of the Ligue 1 weekend.

Bradley Barcola to score any time – 15/8 (Kwiff)

Given the competition for places at the Parc des Princes, Bradley Barcola had to remain patient for game time last season.

The former Lyon man started just over half of PSG’s Ligue 1 games, during which time he scored four goals in Ligue 1.

There is a good chance that Barcola will match that return this weekend. He is already on three goals in 2024/25 having notched one against Le Havre and a brace in the demolition of Montpellier.

Luis Enrique was full of praise for the 21-year-old after his exploits last weekend, and it was instructive to hear the manager mention Barcola’s defensive work rate as one of his most important assets.

It is the Frenchman’s talent with the ball that sets him apart, though, and we expect Barcola to make an impact at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy this weekend.
