Liverpool vs Leicester preview

I’m not going to sugarcoat it — I think this is going to be a cricket score at Anfield on Boxing Day.

Liverpool arrive fresh from a comprehensive 6-3 victory over Tottenham in London, leaving them top of the Premier League table by four points with a game in hand.

Only Spurs can better their tally of 37 goals in 16 league matches this season, while they’ve netted 2+ goals in 21 of their 25 competitive outings in the 2024-25 campaign.

They’ve won each of their last five games against Leicester by an aggregate score of 14-2, and have won 10 of their 12 games in all competitions at Anfield with seven clean sheets to boot.

Liverpool are indeed a juggernaut under Arne Slot, but fears of a heavy defeat for Leicester rest more on the shoulders of Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The Dutchman, 48, replaced Steve Cooper and immediately took four points from a possible six against West Ham United and Brighton.

However, the Hammers had 31 shots in that match, which is their highest tally on record. It is also the most shots by a losing away team in a Premier League match since November 2010.

The Foxes have conceded a league-high 82 shots on their goal during Nistelrooy’s four-game tenure with an expected goals conceded (xGC) of 9.54 – worse than only Tottenham and Southampton.

So it perhaps wasn’t too surprising to see Leicester lose heavily to Newcastle and struggling Wolves in their last two games, and another big loss looks likely on Boxing Day.

Demolition

Given everything I’ve said above about Liverpool’s unstoppable attack and Leicester’s inability to prevent shots – I think Liverpool will score more than a handful at Anfield.

The Reds have generated an xG of 13.32 over the last four Premier League games, which is substantially higher than any other side. Leicester, meanwhile, are averaging over seven shots on target conceded with 57 of their 82 shots on target conceded from inside the box.

Hatty

Mohamed Salah hasn’t netted a hat-trick yet this season – but this looks his most likely opportunity.

The Egyptian, 32, is now the Premier League’s outright top goalscorer with 15 – two ahead of Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. He’s netted 18 times in 24 appearances in all competitions with THREE braces in his last five top-flight matches.

The club’s penalty taker is in some of the best form of his entire career, and he’s fired off more efforts (28) than any other Premier League player over the last six games at an average of once every 18.9 minutes.
