Lucas Paqueta asks FA to investigate alleged leaks from betting case

Lucas Paqueta has called for the Football Association (FA) to launch a “thorough investigation” into the disclosure of what he claims to be “false” information regarding his ongoing case on alleged breaches of betting rules.

In May, the West Ham United midfielder was charged with misconduct by the FA in relation to yellow cards he received in Premier League matches against Leicester City on November 12, 2022, Aston Villa on March 12, 2023, Leeds United on May 21, 2023 and Bournemouth on August 12, 2023.

Paqueta denies all charges but could receive a lifetime ban if found guilty. The Brazil international believes the “false and misleading” reports about his case could jeopardise his chances of receiving a fair hearing.

A statement posted on his social media platforms read: “I am frustrated and upset to have read recent misleading and inaccurate press articles, published in both England and Brazil, claiming to disclose information about my case. Some of that information is entirely false and appears designed to undermine my position.

“I am also concerned that, although they are false and misleading, these articles are clearly sourced from an individual close to the case.

“The FA proceedings are supposed to be confidential, and they are extremely serious for me and my family. The continued leaking and publication of inaccurate information in the press is now putting at risk my chance of receiving a fair hearing.

“I have, therefore, instructed my lawyers to write to The FA to request that they conduct a thorough investigation into how information about the case, even if inaccurate, is finding its way into the public domain.”

The FA declined to comment when contacted by The Athletic.

Paqueta’s hearing is set to take place next year. The playmaker, whose contract expires in 2027, with the option of a further year, is still eligible to feature for West Ham, having played in all their seven league games this season.

“He is focusing on being ready to play and to help the team,” West Ham’s head coach Julen Lopetegui said last month. “Our behaviour and work with him is normal. He is showing a good mentality and is focused so let’s see what is going to happen.

“This case I have never had before but the most important thing is that I see the player focused and calm about this situation. We try and be focused on football. He is under contract and all he has to do is play and train well. We encourage him to do this.”
