Maine Legislator Miffed About Lack Of Retail Sports Betting

Maine Senator Joe Baldacci isn’t pleased about the lack of retail sports betting in the state, according to a recent report from News Center Maine.

“It is both surprising and unacceptable that not a single retail operator has commenced operations,” Baldacci wrote in a letter to Milton Champion, the executive director of Maine’s sports betting regulatory agency.

Sports betting in Maine became legal in May of 2022, and online sports betting went live in the state in November of 2023. The state is home to a pair of sports betting apps, with Caesars Sportsbook and DraftKings both operating in Maine.

Despite the online launch, there’s no official timeline for when retail sportsbooks could go live in the state.

“There’s no other place where you could find this level of stagnation,” Baldacci told News Center Maine.

It’s unclear whether Baldacci’s letter will spark movement toward a retail betting launch or if his complaints will go unheard.
