Silchar: A 27-year-old youth allegedly addicted to online gambling died by suicide in Siddeshwar village, Katigara, on Sunday evening.
Authorities suspect Biswajit Malakar’s death was linked to his obsession with online gambling, which had plunged him into dire financial straits.
Biswajit, who had reportedly incurred losses of Rs 12 lakh over a short period of time, was found dead at his home with a chip encircling his neck. According to local sources, Biswajit, the son of a businessman, had attempted suicide twice earlier but his family had saved him both times.
Katigara police recovered the body and transported it to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy. Preliminary investigation suggest that the escalating pressure from gambling debts served as the principal catalyst for the suicide.
This incident has ignited concerns regarding the issue of online gambling addiction in the area.
Biswajit’s death underscores the pressing necessity for an increased awareness and intervention to mitigate the detrimental effects of this perilous habit.
