Manchester United vs Newcastle predictions

When Manchester United beat their cross-town rivals Manchester City 2-1 things were looking up for the Red Devils and their new manager Ruben Amorim.

The win at the Etihad was on December 15th. Just over two weeks ago. It was also their second win in four days in all competitions.

But since then, things have gone horribly wrong for the Reds. They have lost their last three in all competitions.

A 4-3 defeat away at Spurs saw them dumped out of the Carabao Cup. That was followed by back-to-back Premier League defeats. A 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth and a 2-0 Boxing Day defeat on the road at Wolves.

As a result, the Red Devils sit 14th in the table with 22 points from 18 matches. They are now closer to the drop zone than they are the Champions League places.

Ruben Amorim’s team has lost four of their last five in the Premier League and five of their last seven in all competitions. His honeymoon period didn’t last long.

But it’s not just the end of the honeymoon period that Amorim has to contend with. He is now under serious pressure and already there is speculation about his job security in sections of the media.

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is a manager who also found himself under pressure in recent weeks.

In the summer Howe was regarded as a possible future England manager. But a run that saw the Toon Army pick up just two points from four matches as November turned to December, resulted in Howe’s position at Newcastle coming under scrutiny.

The Magpies have since turned things around. They now sit seventh in the table with 29 points from 18 matches.

Part of the four-match winless run was an enthralling 3-3 draw at home to Liverpool. Despite losing the following match 4-2 away at Brentford, the Liverpool draw looks to have been the turning point.

Newcastle is now on a winning streak of four in all competitions. A 4-0 home win over Leicester City got the ball rolling. That was followed by a 3-1 revenge win over Brentford in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup.

Another 4-0 win, this time away at Ipswich, followed. And on Boxing Day, the Black and Whites defeated Aston Villa 3-0 at St. James’ Park. It was a dominant display that saw them have 22 shots on goal against the Champions League contenders.

Eddie Howe has shown how quickly fortunes can turn full circle. Ruben Amorim will be hoping the final fixture of 2024 will be the beginning of a similar run for his struggling Red Devils.

Man Utd vs Newcastle betting tips

Predicting Manchester United results in the current climate is almost impossible.

Based on statistics, we would go for a Newcastle United win. Eddie Howe’s team has won their last four in all competitions, while Manchester United has lost their last three in all competitions.

But, we all know that football isn’t like that. The Red Devils are capable of beating anybody on their day. It’s just predicting when their day is that’s the problem.

Newcastle to win

Manchester United have lost almost half of their matches at Old Trafford this season. Their record is won four, lost four and drawn one.

On the road Newcastle has won three, lost three and drawn three.

If Manchester United lose this, Ruben Amorim will be under serious pressure. The former Sporting Lisbon boss has already mentioned that he is not immune from the sack.

And already at this early stage, he badly needs a result, despite beating Manchester City at the Etihad as recently as just two weeks ago.

We can see Amorim stopping the rot. But it’s hard to back a Manchester United win in their current form. So we are going for Newcastle to win.

Over 47.5 booking points

This is more of a hunch bet than one based on statistics.

Manchester United needs a result. They also need to show some fight in front of their home support after the Bournemouth horror show in their last appearance at Old Trafford.

Amorim’s team picked up 45 booking points alone in their 2-0 defeat to Wolves on Boxing Day. And after receiving just one yellow while scoring no goals in the home defeat to Bournemouth, at the very least, the cards picked up at Molineux is evidence the team showed a bit of spirit and fight.

Furthermore, if the Red Devils are in with a chance of ending their losing run, they could resort to the dark arts.

So with the possibility that this fixture could end in a tight draw, a bet on overs in the cards market is worth taking.

Alexander Isak to score or assist

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak has been on a hot streak of form in recent weeks.

With rumoured interest in the striker from at home and abroad, it is reported that Newcastle have slapped a £150 million price tag on the 25-year-old Swede.

And it’s easy to see why. In his last five Premier League outings Isak has found the net seven times and also provided two assists.

Isak is 8/5 to score anytime and 5/4 to score or assist. With United expected to be stronger defensively than the likes of Leicester and Ipswich, we are backing Isak to score or assist, rather than just to score anytime.
