Manchester United vs Liverpool predictions

Liverpool did not particularly enjoy themselves at Old Trafford last season.

The club’s faint hopes of a quadruple in Jurgen Klopp’s final campaign at Anfield were ended at the home of their arch-rivals, as Manchester United ran out 4-3 winners in an exhilarating FA Cup quarter-final.

Just three weeks later, Liverpool returned to the same ground in the league. They were 1-0 up and in cruise control early in the second half, only to throw away their dominant position and draw 2-2.

The two points dropped were not fatal in of themselves, but that disappointing outcome kick-started a run which saw Liverpool win just two of eight matches before the final day. As a consequence of that downturn, Liverpool bowed out of the Premier League title race.

Needless to say, the Reds will be desperate to make amends when they return to the Theatre of Dreams this weekend. However, it was not just last season that Liverpool struggled to emerge victorious away to their chief adversaries.

In May 2021, Jurgen Klopp’s team beat United 4-2 on the road. But it was a largely meaningless game and it did not prevent the Red Devils finishing above them. It also took place at an empty stadium due to covid-19 restrictions.

A few months later, Liverpool thumped United 5-0 at Old Trafford, a result which marked the beginning of the end for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Yet that was the only time in the entire Klopp era that Liverpool triumphed in front of their arch-rivals’ fans.

In his first ever trip down the M62, Arne Slot has the chance to equal Klopp’s record at a full Old Trafford. A win would continue the excellent start the Dutchman has enjoyed in his new position.

Make no mistake, though, this sort of test is on another level to meetings with Ipswich Town and Brentford.

Back-to-back 2-0 victories over that pair means Liverpool have a 100 percent record at the start of 2024/25, but as Slot himself acknowledged last time out, neither Ipswich nor Brentford is likely to be in the top six at the end of the season. United will hope to be.

Who will own the bragging rights after the latest edition of this famous Premier League rivalry?

Liverpool to win – 17/20 (Sky Bet)

Manchester United kick-started the season with a late but deserved victory over Fulham. However, they were brought back down to earth last weekend, suffering a 2-1 defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion.

That surely marks the end of Erik ten Hag’s experiment with Bruno Fernandes as a false nine. That approach worked against Manchester City, but Pep Guardiola’s side are unique. Joshua Zirkzee should come into the XI here.

It is not ideal that United could be about to use a new setup for the first time against a settled side like Liverpool, who have taken well to Slot’s methods so far.

Home advantage clearly has an effect in this fixture, but Liverpool will have learned from last season’s results – chiefly, that they must take the chances they create.

If the Reds can fashion as many opportunities as they did in either of the Old Trafford games in 2023/24, they should come out on top.

Over 2.5 goals – 2/5 (Sky Bet)

Manchester United’s biggest shortcoming last season was an inability to stop opponents counter-attacking on them.

Many of their matches were more akin to basketball contests, with Ten Hag’s team only occasionally in control of proceedings.

That was very much the case on the two occasions Liverpool visited Old Trafford – and we could see something similar here.

Liverpool are yet to concede this term, but their defence was not faultless against either Ipswich or Brentford.

The neutrals will hope for another entertaining encounter between these two teams on Sunday.

Both teams to score in 2nd half – 11/8 (bet365)

In that aforementioned FA Cup tie, Manchester United scored the last goal in both regulation time and extra time.

First they tied the score at 2-2 through Antony to force an additional 30 minutes, before Amad Diallo notched a dramatic winner just before a penalty shoot-out was due.

If United are behind or level in the closing stages, they will throw everything at Liverpool in search of a goal.

The Reds could pick them off on the break, of course, but this looks like a smart selection as it does not necessarily invalidate our earlier ‘Liverpool to win’ prediction.

It also serves as a way to hedge your bets in case United end up doing better than the bookies expect.
