Marseille vs PSG predictions

Any followers of the Premier League who remember Roberto De Zerbi from his early days at Brighton know the Italian can make an immediate impact when he joins a new club.

And this is exactly what is happening at Marseille, where De Zerbi has led the team to third in Ligue 1 with 17 points from eight matches.

De Zerbi has got Marseille playing attacking football and scoring plenty of goals. Five wins from his eight games in charge has been largely down to the 21 goals scored by the Phocéens.

The change has been extraordinary. In 34 matches in the 2023/24 season, Marseille found the net 52 times on their way to a disappointing 8th place finish. Already this season, the Phocéens are nearly halfway to that goal haul after just eight matches.

As well as being known for attacking football, De Zerbi teams are also well known for conceding goals. His Marseille team has conceded eight times in eight matches. Not a phenomenal amount, but a goal a game.

But that’s the trade off with the Italian. And it’s fair to assume that most Marseille fans will settle for conceding a few in return for scoring bucket loads at the other end.

Luis Enrique also only knows one way to play football. The Spaniard may not have Kylian Mbappe anymore, but in Bradley Barcola, Enrique has the top scorer in Ligue 1 with seven goals in eight matches.

Furthermore, PSG has scored 25 goals in their eight league games this season. The team’s goal scoring exploits have led them to top spot in the league.

Paris has 20 points from eight matches. But they are only ahead of Monaco on goal difference.

At the start of the French league season, the Ligue 1 title is usually non-negotiable for whoever is in the PSG hotseat. The Parisians are usually looking for a way to win the Champions League and can almost treat the domestic league secondary.

But with Monaco, LOSC and Marseille, all looking dangerous this season, Luis Enrique can’t afford to take his eye off the domestic action.

His team’s form has dropped off since the start of the Champions League. Home wins over Rennes (3-1) and Strasbourg (4-2) have been enough to keep Paris top of the table as their away form has slightly suffered.

Successive 1-1 draws away at Reims and Nice has seen the gap at the top of the table close. These results have put pressure on PSG ahead of their biggest test of the season on Sunday night.

Marseille vs Paris Saint-Germain betting tips

The atmosphere on the French coast will be insane. Marseille will be right up for this match and their fans will turn it into a hostile atmosphere. PSG has dropped points on the road recently. But if any fixture will get their mojo back, it’s this one.

Nevertheless, Marseille will be ready for this and we expect De Zerbi’s team to take the match to Paris. Marseille will be hard to beat at home. You can read more about our thoughts on the match in our betting tips:

Marseille and the draw in double chance

We already know that PSG have dropped points on the road in recent weeks.

Paris also slipped up at home in the Champions League on Tuesday, when they were held to a 1-1 draw by PSV, a match they would have expected to win.

This could be a good time for Marseille to be playing the league leaders.

Marseille are coming off the back of a 5-0 win away at Montpellier. That victory ended a two-match run without a win and got their season back on track.

The Phocéens are unbeaten at home this season and we expect to see that run continue against Paris.

Back Marseille and the draw in double chance market at 4/5 with SBK

Over 3.5 goals

Both teams are scoring plenty of goals and both are also far from secure at the back.

As we just mentioned, Marseille scored five on the road last Sunday. PSG put four past Strasbourg last Saturday.

Over 3.5 goals has been scored in five of Marseille’s eight matches and it has also been scored in six of PSG’s eight Ligue 1 fixtures.

Both teams only know one way to play. There is very little chance of the two sides cancelling each other out in this match. Over 3.5 looks a safe bet.

Back over 3.5 goals at 4/5 with SBK

Marseille to score Over 1.5 goals

Marseille has scored two or more goals in six of their eight matches this season.

Furthermore, they have Mason Greenwood in their ranks and he is the second top scorer in Ligue 1 this season with six goals from eight appearances this season. The former Manchester United forward is averaging a goal every 76 minutes.

Greenwood has been making waves in the media in England with rumours the striker wants talks with new Three Lions’ manager Thomas Tuchel about his international future. The striker knows the best way he can work his way back into the fold is with goals in big games.

Marseille aren’t going to beat PSG by sitting back and defending. They know they will need to score more than once to beat a PSG team that has scored in every Ligue 1 match this season.

And we think they have a chance of doing it.

Choose Marseille to score over 1.5 goals at 7/5 with SBK
